Samsung Semiconductor CEO and President Dr. Chang-Gyu Hwang Named 2005 Recipient of EIA Leadership26 April 2005
The Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA), the leading advocate in Washington, D.C., for the U.S. high-tech industry, named Dr. Chang-Gyu Hwang, president & chief executive officer, Semiconductor Business, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, as the 2005 recipient of the Alliance's Leadership in Technology and Innovation Award at a special EIA luncheon here today. Dr. Hwang was cited for his role in creating groundbreaking technological achievements and his work in guiding Samsung's ascendancy as the leading global company in advanced semiconductor technology solutions. "Samsung Semiconductor's performance under Dr. Hwang's aegis embodies a major goal of EIA symbolized by its Leadership in Technology and Innovation Award: to promote and expand opportunities for innovation in the global marketplace," EIA President Dave McCurdy said. "As the market leader in advanced semiconductor technology such as flash and mobile memory, Samsung has enabled manufacturers to develop higher-performance, multifunctional electronic products, and is poised to create future innovative semiconductor solutions for corporate, mobile and digital consumer communication. Under Dr. Hwang's direction, Samsung Electronics' Semiconductor Business has grown from a supplier of memory for personal computers and servers to a leading innovator of new semiconductor solutions for the mobile and digital consumer markets. Samsung is a pioneer in the development and growth of the cutting-edge semiconductor technology known as NAND flash memory. The company recently announced investments of $24 billion in the integrated circuit sector by 2010.
Dr. Hwang, an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) Fellow since 2002, has authored or co-authored more than 50 technical papers in international journals and conferences and was listed as one of the top twenty-five "Stars of Asia" by BusinessWeek in 2003. He joins former HP Chairman and CEO Carly Fiorina (recipient of the EIA 2004 Medal of Honor); former U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge; former U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick; Dr. Sidney Harman, co-founder of Harman/Kardon (later Harman International); former U.S. Congressman and Corning, Inc. CEO Amo Houghton, and others as recipients of EIA awards.
