3PAR and Riverbed Deliver Information Technology and Disaster Recovery Consolidation
24 February 2007
3PAR(R), the leading provider of Utility Storage, and Riverbed(R) (Nasdaq: RVBD), the performance leader in wide-area data services (WDS), announced today that the two companies have partnered to deliver an IT and disaster recovery consolidation solution for the enterprise. Tested and backed by a joint support agreement, the offering features Riverbed Steelhead(R) appliances and 3PAR InServ(R) Storage Servers with Remote Copy. Customers can now confidently leverage the proven consolidation technologies of both 3PAR and Riverbed for added savings and simplicity. "We use 3PAR Remote Copy with native IP connectivity and Riverbed Steelhead WDS appliances to deliver extremely simple and efficient disaster recovery (DR) capabilities," said Kevin Fiore, Vice President and Director of Engineering Services at Thomas Weisel Partners. "With this combined offering, we are able to meet stringent DR requirements with virtually no administration, while speeding data transfers significantly." Consolidated Disaster Recovery Made Simple and Efficient Disaster recovery consolidation efforts are often costly and complex to implement, hindered by numerous replication technologies, expensive professional service engagements and high storage, software and bandwidth costs. Given these constraints, users tend to judiciously select a subset of their application environment for disaster recovery support. With 3PAR and Riverbed, users are not forced into making these difficult trade-offs. The simplicity and efficiency of the combined 3PAR and Riverbed disaster recovery offering means that large and comprehensive application environments can be cost-effectively deployed and protected. Riverbed's WDS solutions enable organizations with more than one office to overcome a host of severe problems, including poor application performance and insufficient bandwidth at remote sites. Riverbed's award-winning Steelhead appliances speed the performance of applications between distributed sites, by five to 50 times and in some cases up to 100 times between enterprise datacenters and remote offices, enabling organizations to consolidate IT-- redundant servers, redundant storage, remote tape backups and all of the associated management overhead can be removed--without impacting the end-user experience. Riverbed's enablement of greater IT and disaster recovery consolidation is enhanced by the ability of 3PAR Utility Storage to absorb the increased capacity and data workloads that consolidation demands. 3PAR InServ Storage Servers with Remote Copy, a simple, efficient and flexible replication technology, allow customers to affordably protect and share data from any application. Implemented natively over IP and with only a handful of simple, intuitive commands, 3PAR Remote Copy can be set-up, managed and tested in a matter of minutes. Costly and prolonged professional services engagements that are common with other replication technologies are thereby eliminated. Users can mirror data between InServ Storage Servers of any model and configuration, as well as between source and target volumes that can be flexibly and differentially configured. Special efficiencies stem from Remote Copy's Thin Copy technology, which allows target volumes to provide the same dramatic cost savings and ease-of-use benefits associated with Thin Provisioned source volumes. And with Remote Copy's asynchronous periodic mode, bandwidth is efficiently utilized since changed data within a volume or consistency group is transferred only once--no matter how many times it may have changed between synchronization intervals. "The combination of the 3PAR and Riverbed products blends the unique capabilities of each company for a compelling disaster recovery solution," said Tony Asaro, Senior Analyst for the Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG). "3PAR and Riverbed offer next generation technologies for enabling disaster recovery. This partnership creates best-in-class efficiencies for disaster recovery leveraging the value propositions of both Riverbed and 3PAR." Improved IT Consolidation The combined 3PAR and Riverbed offering also provides enhanced server and storage consolidation benefits over traditional IT technologies and without affecting the end-user experience. The optimizations delivered by Riverbed provide LAN-like quality over the WAN, while the 3PAR InServ Storage Server-- designed from the ground up for storage consolidation--is the ideal storage complement to support the increased capacity and workloads associated with server consolidation. With 3PAR Utility Storage, users can scale massively and confidently within a single-tiered storage subsystem while starting and growing in small, affordable increments. "One-third of our business today is associated with remote data replication. The power of this relationship with Riverbed is our ability to deliver a comprehensive server and storage consolidation platform that simplifies disaster recovery and the overall IT infrastructure," said David Scott, President and CEO for 3PAR.
