FIPS Encryption Validation for RELM's P25 Digital Portable Radio by National Institute of Standards and Technology
16 February 2007
RELM Wireless Corporation (Amex: RWC) has received a Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2 validation from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) certifying secure encryption for its cryptographic module used with the BK Radio digital portable DPH 5102x radio, also compliant with the APCO Project 25 (P25) technical standard for interoperable digital, analog and mixed-mode public safety radio communications. "The FIPS validation confirms that the encryption capability of our world- class digital portable radio has passed the toughest field test," comments RELM President and CEO David Storey. "Like the entire family of BK Radio P25 digital radio products, the DPH portable continues to meet and exceed the highest performance standards, yet with greater cost efficiency than any competitor's comparable P25 radio products." Interoperable with other manufacturers' digital and analog VHF radios also in compliance with the APCO Project 25 standard, the BK Radio DPH 5102x portable also embodies unique distinctions and advantages including exceptional audio quality and clarity, longer battery life between charges or (disposable battery) changes, simplicity and ease of operation and programming, and rock-solid reliability. "The FIPS encryption validation is significant," adds Dave Storey. "For agencies and portable radio users requiring secure encrypted communications, FIPS certification provides independent assurance that our BK Radio DPH 5102x meets that requirement." APCO Project 25 is the technical standard for digital land mobile radio (LMR) operations established by the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials -- International (APCO) and adopted by a broad range of interrelated government agencies.
