After Tuesday's Bell Market Commentary
On Tuesday, the New York-based Conference Board said its Index of Leading Economic Indicators edged up 0.3 percent last month, suggesting the economy may grow at a modest clip in the next several months. The housing and job markets are showing signs of leveling, while manufacturers appear to grow less cautious about inventory. The index is closely watched because it is designed to forecast economic activity over the next three to six months. Six of the 10 indicators that make up the index rose in December. Crude oil surged more than $2 a barrel and triggered a rally. A barrel of light, sweet crude rose $2.47, or 4.7 percent, to settle at $55.04. The dollar was mixed against other major currencies, while gold prices spiked. The Dow rose 56.64, or 0.45 percent, to close at 12,533.80. The Nasdaq composite index rose 0.34, or 0.01 percent, to 2,431.41. The Standard & Poor's 500 index ended up 5.04, or 0.35 percent, at 1,427.99. The Russell 2000 index gained 7.42, or 0.95 percent, to 785.38.
