In a study of adult personal ads by Douglas Raybeck, Ph.D., a professor of anthropology at Hamilton College in New York, he found out that most people use adult personal ads as "meta-statements" about themselves. People do not really intend to lie or exaggerate in their personal ads. It is just natural for us to put ourselves in a good or better light. The fact that the space for adult personal ads is often limited to a few sentences is exactly why we are more inclined to cram in all our best qualities in them.
The Internet has given rise to personal ads, especially free classifieds like Craigslist with categories ranging from strictly platonic to casual encounters. It seems everyone, through their adult personal ads, have been given megaphones to shout and announce their feelings and desires to the world. Online personal ads are the quickest, most effective, not to mention discreet and free way to meet and hook up with new people, find a date, and even start a steamy intimate affair. Distance and boundary are no longer an issue as people get to choose partners according to their area. And, if anything, because most adult personal ads require a photograph from its members, the often-disappointing surprises of blind dates have been effectively eliminated.
Indeed, adult personal ads are a booming business in the Internet, as more and more people have become open to the possibilities of casual and glorious affairs.
Still Lonely
The Internet might have a shrinking-effect for our world. Yet, ironically, for some, it still is a lonely place. It seems that the more technology links everyone, the easier it is to feel alone. Now with our mobile phones and e-mails, it's easier to grow sad and feel bad at the slightest instance of them not ringing or blinking with a message.
On July 14, 2004, reports the New Yorker, someone nicknamed Lonely accidentally created a chat forum entitled "I am so lonely will anyone speak to me". He wasn't supposed to name it that way, as the website was devoted to digital video purposes, but it just felt like an appropriate title. Little did he know that his accidental and serendipitous forum would be responded to by hundreds of people from all over the world, who simply googled up the phrase, "I'm so lonely".
Millions of adult personal ads are drifting in cyberspace, and thousands more are created each day. They might be misleading or pompous at times, but one thing is for sure, they're never hopeless.
