SonicWALL Internet Threat Prevention Keeps Skype Trojan at Bay

23 December 2006

SonicWALL, Inc. (Nasdaq: SNWL), a leading provider of network, Web, email security and backup and recovery solutions, has deployed protection against a Trojan horse targeted at users of Skype Chat, the Net telephone provider's instant-messaging tool. The threat is spread by sending instant messages or emails to individuals, suggesting that they download and run an sp.exe file, which would allow the threat to self-propagate.

Users of SonicWALL's Unified Threat Management technology, which protects against viruses, Trojans, worms and other threats and vulnerabilities, automatically receive updated signatures designed to repel security threats.

"The Trojan is designed ultimately to steal passwords and sensitive data," says Alex Dubrovsky of SonicWALL's Security Center. "Users receive an email or instant message with an embedded link to an .exe file. When the .exe file runs, it downloads another binary file which embeds itself into the Skype application and not only attempts to retrieve sensitive data, but also starts sending Pakes Trojan messages to all that user's Skype contacts."

On Monday, December 18, users of SonicWALL's Unified Threat Management technology received the new signature Gorf (Worm) designed to protect against this threat.

SonicWALL has developed unique technologies to deliver zero day gateway anti-virus, anti-spyware and intrusion prevention signatures to its subscribers on a continual basis, allowing them to defend against new and existing Internet attacks and exploits such as phishing, viruses, DHA or DoS attacks and more.
