Ascalade ships Skype Certified(TM) cordless PC-free VoIP phones for multiple retail markets
12 December 2006
Ascalade Communications Inc. ("Ascalade" or "the Company") (TSX: ACG) announced today it has commenced shipment of the Skype Certified(TM) cordless PC-free VoIP phones to three strategic customers for retail distribution. Ascalade and Skype, the global Internet communications company, collaborated to develop the cordless VoIP phone that enables people to use Skype's Internet calling software without the need for a personal computer. Ascalade also collaborated with its strategic customers on unique industrial designs for the phones, which will be marketed and sold under each customer's retail brand in different product categories. This cordless VoIP phone for Skype does not require a user to own a computer to make Internet calls and enables non-computer savvy users to take advantage of the convenience and cost savings from Internet calling using Skype. No monthly subscription to VoIP service providers is required and users can simply connect the cordless PC-free VoIP phone to their Internet line to make free calls to their Skype contacts or to make inexpensive calls to landlines or mobile phone numbers using SkypeOut(TM). The phone also features a connection to ordinary PSTN lines for traditional phone calling. (It is important to note that Skype itself is not a replacement of an ordinary phone and it cannot be used for emergency calling.) Ascalade's strategic customers for the cordless PC-free VoIP phone are well known brand leaders in their respective consumer retail markets. One of the three customers is Europe's largest electronics company, well known for its innovation and quality in healthcare, lifestyle and technology products. The other two customers include a recognized brand leader in voice, wireless and ethernet networking hardware for consumers and small business users, as well as a worldwide provider of advanced networking equipment for home users and small to medium-sized businesses. "Shipping the Skype Certified cordless PC-free VoIP phones marks another milestone towards bringing user-friendly VoIP applications to mass market," said Brian Ho, Vice President of Business Development of Ascalade Communications. "By working with Skype and multiple strategic consumer brand leaders, this new VoIP phone brings the convenience and benefits of using Skype for VoIP calling one step closer to your everyday consumer. Through multiple retail distribution channels, this new more user-friendly product will become available to anyone who wants to take advantage of Internet calling, even those who don't own a computer." The cordless PC-free VoIP phones for Skype are expected to be available shortly to consumers in Europe and in North America under the strategic customers' brands.
