Telefonia Bonairiano Selects Extreme Networks' Carrier Ethernet Solution for Next Generation IP Network
29 November 2006
Extreme Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: EXTR) today announced that its high performance BlackDiamond(R) 12K Carrier switching solution that provides resilient, simple and cost- effective Ethernet services has been selected and deployed by Telefonia Bonairiano N.V. (Telbo(1)), with the help of integrators Savant Communications N.V. and Esconac N.V., as part of its IP network and converged services build- out. Telbo, which serves the island of Bonaire, a part of the southern chain of the Lesser Antilles, recently made the strategic decision to plan and deploy a converged 'Next Generation Network' (NGN) to support the deployment of IP- based voice and interactive multimedia services. Telbo selected Savant Communications and solutions from Extreme Networks(R) to implement key technologies into the network, including, Layer 2 Ethernet with carrier-class resiliency and sub 50 millisecond failover via Extreme's Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching (EAPS), (IETF RFC 3619), and 10 Gigabit scalability. Extreme Networks advanced network platform, ExtremeXOS(TM), provides a modular software operating system with distinctive features, including the ability to enable devices to require zero scheduled downtime, and automatic process restart to keep the switch operational even when a single application may stall. "Our decision to go all-IP meant finding the right vendor to help us build and operate a high-speed Metro Ethernet network on an island of 111 square miles for a population of 13,000," said John Peters, manager of network operations for Telbo. "Technology is similar to nature, it always finds a way and Ethernet is the clear choice for scaling converged IP services. I am very pleased with the level of commitment from Extreme Networks on behalf of our project as this will directly benefit our subscribers." The selection of an infrastructure vendor hinged upon measuring Telbo's investment against expected ROI, CAPEX, a demonstrated commitment to R&D by the infrastructure vendor, modularity of the solution and the availability of regional support of the chosen vendor. The existing network design was re- visited, current trends were analyzed and future speculations scrutinized in order to produce an all IP network architecture blueprint. The resulting architecture allows Telbo to offer multiple services on top of a converged data network, both seamlessly and efficiently. "Extreme Networks BlackDiamond 12K series was the best solution among the vendors that we evaluated to suit Telbo's backbone transmission project," said Abdel Majid El'Hoss of Savant Communications N.V. "With Extreme Networks platform we can implement a solution with standard equipment from a management, maintenance and operations perspective, for core, distribution and access functions, and make use of the consistent Layer 2 Ethernet protocol. With that, the choice was clear." "Telbo is a clear example of how Extreme Networks delivers an effective business proposition with carrier-class network based on Multidimensional Ethernet technology." "Working with our key partner, Savant Communications and Esconac NV, we are able to expand our reach and implement the most cost-effective and suitable solutions to customers such as Telbo," said Dan Sibille, senior director of North American channels for Extreme Networks. "We are very pleased to share this key success." Extreme Networks, Inc.
