Leaders from the nation's nursing practice organizations, educational institutions, informatics/technology businesses, government agencies, and other key stakeholders are gathering October 30th - November 1st at the 2006 TIGER Summit to create a 3-year local and global action plan for bridging the quality chasm with information technology.
The Summit, "Evidence and Informatics Transforming Nursing," comes at a time when the nation is working full-speed to realize the 10-year goal of Electronic Health Records for its citizens. This is a critical juncture for nurses, who comprise 55% of the health care workforce, number more than 3 million, and who must become more aware and involved at every level of the Informatics Revolution.
The invitation-only TIGER Summit to take place at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, Maryland, brings the leaders together around a singular exploratory focus: Creating a vision for the future of nursing that bridges the quality chasm with information technology (IT), enabling nurses to use informatics in practice and education to provide safer, higher-quality patient care.
The Summit will yield a 10-year vision and 3-year local and global action plan for transforming nursing practice and education to better prepare nurses to practice in an increasingly automated, informatics-rich, and consumer-driven health care environment.
Additional outcomes include a published TIGER Summit Report including exemplars of excellence and Summit results, and guidelines for organizations to follow as they integrate informatics knowledge, skills and abilities into academic and practice settings.
The two-day agenda incorporates keynote presentations, panel discussions, practice and education exemplars, large and small group dialogue, audience response technology, experiential learning (Gallery Walk), as well as open-space facilitation with real-time graphic recording to maximize output from the 120 participants. The organizations that will provide technology demonstrations in the Gallery Walk include the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), Apptis, Audience Response Systems, Cerner Corporation, Clinical Information Technology Program Office (CITPO/AHLTA), CliniComp Intl., CPM Resource Center, Eclipsys, Elsevier, GE Healthcare Systems, McKesson, MITRE Corporation, National Library of Medicine, Siemens and Thomson Healthcare.
In addition, Deans attending the national American Association of College of Nursing (AACN) meeting have been invited to an Opening Night Reception on Monday night to dialogue with special guests, government dignitaries, speakers and participants. At this time, the Gallery Walk will also be open to attendees for a self-guided, interactive experience of current and emerging technologies.

The TIGER Summit has been in the planning for nearly two years as a response to the demand for healthcare transformation that was presented by the National Office of the Coordinator for Health IT in July 2004.
