Carrier Access' Broadmore Product Receives Common Criteria EAL-3 Validation

25 August 2006

Carrier Access Corporation (NASDAQ: CACS), a leading provider of converged access solutions, announced today its Broadmore® family of cell multiplexers received Common Criteria Certification to the EAL-3 level, thereby validating that the Broadmore's design, software development methodology, and multi-layered security mechanisms meet or exceed the third evaluation assurance level for controlled access as defined by the international standard.

The Common Criteria for IT Security Evaluations, also known as ISO standard 15408, was developed by the national security organizations of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and The Netherlands and is recognized by numerous other countries. It provides a broad range of evaluation criteria for many types of commercial and nationally-sensitive government-use IT security products.

"Customers who buy Carrier Access' Broadmore can rely on the products to provide dependable transport solutions," said Maureen Crozier, Carrier Access' Vice President, Engineering, "Common Criteria EAL-3 Certification validates that, in an environment with adequate physical security, the Broadmore requires proper identification and authorization for access, protects important data and functions using certified encryption, incorporates proper functional audits and has built-in failure recovery modes."

Common Criteria evaluations entail formal rigorous analysis and testing to examine security aspects of a product or system. Extensive testing activities involve a comprehensive and formally repeatable process, confirming that the security product functions as claimed by the manufacturer. Security weaknesses and potential vulnerabilities are specifically examined during wide-ranging evaluation and testing.

"Having Common Criteria certification in combination with FIPS 104-2 validation and JITC listing for the Broadmore platform presents a proven interoperable solution for our clients," said John Hall, CONUS Federal Sales Manager for LTI DataComm (http://www.ltidata.com), a veteran-owned supplier of network systems and services since 1981. "Receiving the accreditation underscores Carrier Access' ability to meet the stringent requirements of our customers, including the Department of Defense (DoD), for reliability, interoperability, and cost-effectiveness. Achieving EAL-3 certification for the Broadmore solution further reinforces LTI Datacomm's mission of offering our valued customers long-term network performance improvements, while maximizing existing infrastructure and legacy systems."

Carrier Access Broadmore 500 and 1700 certification details are posted on the Common Criteria Internet site at http://niap.bahialab.com/cc-scheme/st/ST_VID10007.cfm.

The Carrier Access Broadmore, with its variety of service and network interfaces, enables the high-speed transport of ATM, video, voice and data over SATCOM links, microwave, and other fixed wireless deployments. DS1, DS3, serial, HSSI, OC-3c, and OC-12c network interfaces are available to meet a wide range of network options. Carrier Access' investment into Common Criteria certification for the Broadmore platform validates its continued commitment of offering a uniquely economical means of provisioning, grooming and routing DS3, DS1, E3, E1 and high-speed serial data circuits up to 273Mbps using logical ATM connections that meet the stringent security requirements of its customers.
