blinkx.tv Extends Online Video Index with Public Information Films from the UK National Archives

26 June 2006

blinkx, the biggest video search engine in the world, is expanding its video content index by adding public information films from National Archives in West London. Under the terms of the agreement, blinkx will automatically index clips from The National Archives and make them fully searchable directly from http://www.blinkx.tv.

The National Archives covers England, Wales and the United Kingdom, and is responsible for looking after the records of central government and the courts of law. Commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Central Office of Information (COI), another blinkx partner, The National Archives is featuring a selection of the most memorable and influential COI public information films from 1945-2006 covering events from Britain's post-war history. Users can now search for this historical footage at http://www.blinkx.tv.

"We are delighted to be providing historical content to our users from Britain's National Archives. People are turning to the web for both entertaining and informative content, and The National Archives video clips will continue to broaden the vast array of video content that can be found by searching with blinkx.tv," said Suranga Chandratillake, CTO and Founder, blinkx.

blinkx.tv is the only search engine optimised for rich media. It uses advanced speech recognition technology to automatically index and transcribe audio and video content, literally watching and listening to video and audio on the web to make it searchable right down to the individual spoken words. Combined with The National Archives' unique content, users of http://www.blinkx.tv will be able to find relevant informational videos with a degree of control not previously possible.

"We are committed to making more of our information available online" said James Strachan, The National Archives' Director of Public Services and Marketing. "Our partnership with blinkx makes it easy for everyone with a love of history to discover and enjoy these historic public information films, whose fascinating content has so much to tell us about social trends in post-war Britain."

About blinkx

blinkx.tv is the world's most comprehensive video search engine. Today, blinkx.tv has indexed more than 4,000,000 hours of audio, video, viral and TV content, and made it fully searchable and available on demand. blinkx's founders set out to solve a significant challenge -- as TV and Garage Video on the web explodes, keyword-based search technologies only scratch the surface. blinkx's patented search technologies listen to -- and even see -- the web, helping users enjoy a breadth and accuracy of search results not available elsewhere. In addition, blinkx powers the video search for many of the world's most frequented sites. blinkx is a privately-held company based in San Francisco and London. More information is available at http://www.blinkx.tv.

About The National Archives

The National Archives, Kew, http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk has one of the largest archival collections in the world, spanning 1000 years of British history, from the iconic Domesday Book to newly released government papers. The free museum and research rooms are open to the public 6 days a week.

Over nine million records are available to view at Kew and some, including wills, First World War Army medal cards and Second World War Seamen's medal records, are also available online at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline

The Family Records Centre, Islington, which is jointly managed by The National Archives and the Office for National Statistics, holds the indexes (not the certificates themselves) for births, deaths and marriages for England and Wales from July 1837 and also copies of wills, before 1858, from the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC) and some other church courts.
