it's the lifeblood of ASM's communication." Enterprise Vault Reduces Storage Needs and Drives Down Costs Effective e-mail storage space has become a major concern for ASM. Theaverage employee mailbox at ASM is more than one gigabyte because many ofits users transmit large file attachments, such as high-resolutiongraphics. Prior to implementing Enterprise Vault, ASM had to purchaseadditional storage hardware to accommodate its exponential e-mail growth.By consolidating e-mails into a single online archive, Enterprise Vault hashelped eliminate the need for additional costly storage hardware, whilereducing the burden on ASM's Microsoft Exchange™ servers. Enterprise Vault uses Single Instance Storage functionality, which preventsthe software from saving multiple copies of the same e-mail in the archive.By saving only one copy of an e-mail or attachment, rather than of storingevery copy that is sent back and forth, Enterprise Vault has helped reduceASM's storage needs by 90 percent and enabled the company to save 60percent on hardware and software acquisition costs for its e-mail solution. With Enterprise Vault, the agency purchased three e-mail servers in 2005,instead of the eight it would have otherwise needed. Offline Accessibility and Transparency to Users ASM's highly mobile sales force requires e-mail access even when employeesare not connected to the network. Enterprise Vault's Offline Vault featureallows ASM's mobile users to access a local compressed copy of theirarchived data when they are working offline. When users reconnect to thenetwork, their data is automatically synchronized to the network and allchanges are captured. "One of the best features of Enterprise Vault is that it archives e-mailseamlessly to the end user," says Hiatt. "With Enterprise Vault, archivede-mail messages remain visible in the user's mailbox, appearing with avault icon instead of the usual envelope icon. They simply double-click onthe message and it opens. Most users don't even realize they're accessingthe archives." Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam Saves the Equivalent Cost of 83 Full-TimeEmployees In addition to making e-mail integrated and accessible to users whilecontaining storage costs, ASM needed to control spam. Spam has previouslyclogged the network with worthless data and represented millions of dollarsin lost productivity. In 2005 alone, 82 percent of the e-mail messages ASMreceived were spam. "Assuming that it takes an average user five secondsto delete each spam message, we lose 156,000 hours of productivity a year-- the equivalent of 83 full-time employees," explains Hiatt. With an accuracy rate of 99.9999 percent, ASM has found Symantec BrightmailAntiSpam effectively blocked 142 million spam messages in 2005 withvirtually no false positives. "The solution now saves us nearly $3 milliona year in employee efficiency," adds Hiatt. "If you include the increasedprocessing bandwidth and disk storage, the savings are even greater."
