JDSU Unveils NetComplete(TM) VoIP Service Assurance Solution for the Cable Industry

22 June 2006

JDSU today introduced its voice over IP (VoIP) NetComplete Service Assurance Solution for the cable industry. The solution, deployed today by one of North America's largest cable operators, combines an industry-leading portfolio of test, measurement and monitoring applications for mass market VoIP deployment. It will be on display with other JDSU triple-play test solutions at SCTE's Cable-Tec Expo 2006, in Denver, June 21-23, booth number 1475.

Through intelligent data collection, consolidation, and correlation, NetComplete enables cable operators to efficiently expand service penetration without having to scale operations. It improves network and service performance and increases operational efficiency with quick and dependable turn-up verification, rapid problem detection, segmentation and troubleshooting.

"NetComplete addresses the challenges cable operators face when deploying VoIP," said Roger Lingle, vice president of marketing for JDSU's Service Assurance Solutions business unit. "NetComplete gives operators an invaluable advantage -- accurate visibility into the end-user's VoIP experience and a clear understanding of where, when and why the voice signal clarity needs improvement. Its ability to immediately isolate VoIP problems results in increased quality of service (QoS), lowered operational costs, drastically reduced truck rolls and a decrease in mean-time-to-repair (MTTR)."

NetComplete is an integrated, comprehensive test system built from JDSU's intimate understanding of service delivery challenges specific to a packet cable environment. It measures hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) characteristics, the cable modem termination system (CMTS) and IP network, providing complete visibility into problem areas that are affecting voice signal clarity. On an individual cable VoIP customer basis, it correlates the data and presents a complete analysis to a cable technician on one screen to quickly pinpoint the root cause of a service problem.

It can also perform real time analysis of mean opinion score (known as MOS, a measure of voice quality), and of simultaneous customer calls and correlate this to the signal's radio frequency (RF) performance from a single, centralized location.

In a typical scenario, when an issue -- such as garbled voice -- is affecting voice quality, NetComplete's data collection can help pinpoint the cause from several potential problems. For example, it can identify the fault as a systemic IP network problem affecting multiple customers being serviced from the same CMTS. Or, it can determine that the issue stems from a particular customer's media terminal adapter (MTA) with problems resulting from issues in the RF plant. This expedited process quickly combines IP and RF metrics analysis into a single system, saving time and money by immediately routing the trouble ticket to the appropriate group for quick resolution.

Last month NetComplete received the highest assigned score -- a 4.5 out of a possible five -- from industry-leading judges in a recent Diamond technology review sponsored by Broadband Gear Report. The publication called it an "excellent product with technical features and performance that provide clear and substantial benefits."
