Nationwide Electronics Announces Five-Year Manufacturing Agreement with TekVet, LLC
10 June 2006
Nationwide Electronics, Inc., an independent design, development and global distributor today announced it has entered into a five-year design and manufacturing agreement with TekVet®, LLC., to produce more than 5 million of its TekVet SmartSensors® during the first six months of the agreement. "Since signing this agreement, Nationwide has already helped us transition to a second-generation design of the TekVet SmartSensor, which uses fewer components and can be produced in mass quantities," said D. Bret Smith, chief executive officer of TekVet. "Nationwide's new product configuration for the SmartSensor has been superb and its simple design allows it to be rapidly installed by non-technical workers on a feedlot or dairy farms, which is very important." In addition to its TekVet SmartSensor development efforts, Nationwide has also been instrumental in helping TekVet begin developing a wireless version of the TekVet SmartReceiver, which is anticipated for release in the second half of 2006. "We've helped to reduce the number of components inside the TekVet SmartSensor, as well as changed the design of the plastic housing to build in greater rigidity and ultimately waterproof the device," said David Robbins, president of Nationwide Electronics. "Our design modifications also reduced the steps in the manufacturing process, which helps us to be more productive here at our facility." The TekVet System is an automated radio frequency (RF) wireless solution designed to constantly monitor the core temperatures of large livestock at ranges of 300 to 500 feet, while capturing vital historical data through a private network. Through the TekVet System® Research and Development Grant Program, universities, colleges and non-profit research organizations can capitalize on TekVet's technology and allow researchers the ability to better track, trace, and monitor their animals wirelessly. About the TekVet System Central to the TekVet System is the TekVet SmartSensor: a small wireless device that is attached to a cow's ear and includes a flexible thermometer, a wireless transceiver and other electronic components. The TekVet SmartSensor is attached to an animal's ear in much the same way identification tags are as used by beef producers, ranchers and dairy farmers. Once in place, the TekVet SmartSensor constantly monitors the animal's core body temperature and alerts management immediately of temperatures outside of normal thresholds. The data is then captured by TekVet SmartReceivers and transmitted wirelessly to the TekVet SmartManagement® system, where it is then immediately uploaded to the company's central database and network operation center in Utah for trend analysis and historical archiving. Although the TekVet System is initially designed to monitor core temperature, future products are currently under development to also measure blood pH, heart rate and other vital signs. TekVet is currently adapting its SmartSensor to other large livestock such as swine, goats and sheep. About Nationwide Electronics, Inc.
