Summer Job Market Looking Up According to CollegeHelpers.com
27 May 2006
College students are looking at a good job market this summer according to job search site CollegeHelpers.com. The recently launched site specializes in part-time, off-campus job postings for college students, employers and colleges. This free service for college students and colleges has seen job postings increase 40% this year. CollegeHelpers.com also lists its top tips for finding a summer job and how to make the most of the summer job experience. "The market is looking quite good," says Fred Grant, president of CollegeHelpers.com. "This is good news for college students looking for summer work but it's also important for students to keep in mind once they land the job they should still be pro-active to get the most out of this learning experience -- a summer job offers networking opportunities, new perspectives as well as receiving positive job references." But why the favorable job trend this year? Students can thank their fellow peers, in part, for the positive market. The US Department of Labor indicates that over the last 10 years the percentage of students enrolled in school during the summer has grown from 16.6% in July of 1995 to 27.8% in July of 2005. While students in school still work, only 50% choose to in comparison to the 75% of students that are not in school. So, while many students will be on the prowl for a summer job, expect that an increasing number will be hitting the books, opening the door to employment for those wanting to work. Once students land that job they still need to keep on their toes. CollegeHelpers.com offers tips for students searching for jobs as well as tips to make the most out of their summer job experience. Top tips include look early and often, consider a location change and ask lots of questions. The site is also an important resource for students, employers and colleges to turn to. Students can benefit from not only searching job postings, but also resume posting, e-mail notifications of new listings and access to jobs posted through other colleges. It worked for Michelle Andrade of Boston College. "I've used many job search web sites, but CollegeHelpers.com was truly unique, well organized and more reliable," says Michelle Andrade, a junior at Boston College. "I plan to continue to use the site especially for researching internships as the response rate was immediate. I landed a great job and it took only a week." Employers benefit from low cost, increased privacy, control over their postings and the ability to reach multiple schools in one location. CollegeHelpers.com offers colleges a way to not only reduce staff time by managing the off-campus job postings but it can improve statistical reporting. It also gives 10% of the revenue to partner colleges for using the service. "We couldn't be more pleased with the results or the service that CollegeHelpers.com provides," says Donna Kendall, Executive Director of Financial Assistance, Bentley College, Waltham, Mass. "The demand for student jobs on campus exceeded our supply. CollegeHelpers.com provided a ready-made solution that we were able to implement quickly, and now our students have a wealth of information about jobs close to campus. Plus we no longer need to manage an off-campus job database." Money is one reason why employers are keen on CollegeHelpers.com. The fee for employers to market their job postings to students at multiple colleges is much less than traditional job search web sites. For one month not-for-profit employers pay $10 and for-profit employers pay $30 a month.
