Google Rated "Best Global Web Site" -- For the Third Time in a Row

27 May 2006

Escondido, CA (PRWEB) May 24, 2006 -- In 2003, Byte Level Research first published The Web Globalization Report Card, a landmark report that rated how successfully companies developed Web sites for international markets. This report rated Google as the best site out of 121 Web sites studied.

Today, Byte Level Research published the third edition of The Web Globalization Report Card and, once again, Google has emerged on top. Expanded and improved, the report rates the Web sites of 300 companies across 22 industry categories. The top 10 global Web sites are as follows:

1. Google

2. Wikipedia

3. HP

4. Cisco Systems

5. IBM

6. Dell

7. IKEA

8. Volvo Cars

9. DHL

10. Xerox

"Since 2003, Google has nearly doubled the number of languages it supports -- to 116 -- making it one of the most global commercial Web sites ever built," said John Yunker, chief analyst at Byte Level Research and author of the report. "But Google is not alone in having expanded language support over the past few years. From BMW to DHL to Starbucks, Web globalization is now a fact of life for most global companies."

Wikipedia finished in second place, proving that you don't need to be a global corporation to develop a successful global Web site. HP finished in third place, down from second place in 2005.

Not all Web sites fared as well as the top 10. Many of the underachieving Web sites include some of the most visible brands in America and around the world. "Being a global company is no guarantee of having a successful global Web site," said Yunker.

The Web Globalization Report Card analyzed each Web site according to the following five criteria:

1. Web Site Performance: How quickly does the Web site display?

2. Global Navigation: How quickly can visitors find local content?

3. Global Consistency: Does the Web site use a global template across all locales?

4. Localization: How relevant is the Web site to the Web user's culture and country?

5. Languages: How many languages does the Web site support?

Now in its third edition, The Web Globalization Report Card is the authoritative guide to the state of Web globalization. In addition to identifying leaders and laggards, the report provides a number of key insights, including:

-> What are the most popular languages on the Web today?

-> How many languages do the leading global companies support?

-> What are the best practices in global navigation today?

-> Which companies offer fast-loading Web sites for the world?

-> What are the most globally consistent Web sites?

The Web Globalization Report Card is 115 pages and published in PDF format. It is available for $2,500 for an enterprise license, which includes a PowerPoint Executive Summary.
