Cingular Gets Ready for Summer on Cape Cod
26 May 2006
Cingular Wireless customers now have more cell coverage on Cape Cod and the Islands. As a result of the merger of Cingular Wireless and AT&T Wireless, customers now have access to 68 cell sites on the Cape. Cingular announced today that the company has completed the combination of the two networks and added two new cell sites, significantly enhancing coverage in advance of the Cape's busy summer travel season. "One of the largest areas of improvement will be along Routes 6 and 6A, which we know are key roads for Cape drivers. Enhancing our wireless experience on the Cape before Memorial Day weekend was a top priority for us," said Steve Krom, Vice President and General Manager for Cingular Wireless in New England. "The upgrades we've made to our network are significant and we will continue investing in the state to ensure our customers have the best service possible. In fact, we have over 50 new cell sites planned for Massachusetts this year alone." While improvements will be apparent to Cingular customers all over the Cape and Islands, the communities of Barnstable, Dennis and Brewster will see the most benefit from the combination of Cingular's network and the former AT&T Wireless network. In addition to these enhancements Cingular has turned on a new cell site on Martha's Vineyard in West Tisbury on Old Courthouse Road, bringing better service to the Town Hall area as well as nearby Lambert's Cove beach. Another new site was also added in Falmouth to improve in-building coverage at Falmouth Hospital. Last year Cingular invested more than $180 million to enhance its network in Massachusetts, with an additional $160 million planned in 2006. Nationally, Cingular will invest more than $6 billion expanding and enhancing its network this year. When combined with the company's 2005 network spending, the two- year total approaches $13 billion nationally.
