VA Funded Study on Hypertension Features Carematrix Wireless At-Home Blood Pressure Monitors

25 April 2006

Chicago, IL (PRWEB via PR Web Direct) April 24, 2006 -- Carematix, the leading provider of wireless telehealth monitors, will assist in a three-year study that will examine the effectiveness of behavioral-lifestyle and medication management interventions among veterans with hypertension. The study will be conducted at the Durham Veterans Administration Medical Center, a teaching and research facility affiliated with the Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, NC.

Hypertension is a significant health issue among America's aging veterans. To date, there are more than 8.5 million veterans diagnosed with hypertension. Uncontrolled hypertension greatly increases the risk for cerebral vascular accidents, coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure.

Principal investigator on the study is Dr. Hayden Bosworth, associate director of the Center for Health Services Research in Primary Care at the Durham VA Medical Center and professor at Duke University. During the course of three years, he and his research team will provide Carematix wireless blood pressure units to 450 hypertensive patients. Their blood pressure readings, taken daily, will be transmitted automatically to a centralized database. Depending on blood pressure results, select patients will receive either behavioral-lifestyle intervention, medical medication management or a combination of the two.

«This study is one of the first to compare three interventions designed to improve blood pressure control,» Bosworth said. «The proposed trial will also be one of the first to use telecommunications to activate an intervention and monitor effectiveness. The Carematix wireless monitors, which automatically transmit the readings, will ensure accurate and timely reports as well as ensure high patient adherence due to their ease of use.»

Bosworth added that the use of Carematix monitors has significant potential to enhance the patient monitoring experience and improve the quality of outcomes for patients with hypertension.

«Carematix offers the most patient-preferred monitors in the industry,» said Sukhwant Khanjua, president and founder of Carematix. «Our easy-to-use devices enable the best outcomes by ensuring high patient self-adherence. The monitors also capture the highest-quality data and require the lowest level of technical support of all monitors on the market, due to their wireless simplicity. We are thrilled to be a part of this study, which will further demonstrate the benefits of wireless telehealth solutions.»
