Circuit City and The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) Team Up to Recycle Rechargeable Batteries and Cell Phones

24 April 2006

Circuit City Stores, Inc., one of the nation's leading providers of consumer electronics, and the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC), a nonprofit, public service organization dedicated to recycling used rechargeable batteries and old cell phones, announced today a new relationship that integrates RBRC's recycling program, Call2Recycle(TM), into Circuit City stores throughout the U.S. RBRC spokesman Richard Karn, current host of Family Feud, and formerly "Al Borland" on TV's Home Improvement, helped celebrate the relationship at the Circuit City headquarters in Richmond, Va., where he spoke about the importance of rechargeable battery and cell phone recycling.

The Circuit City/RBRC program makes the recycling of rechargeable batteries and cell phones accessible and convenient for everyone. Starting May 1, consumers can drop off their used rechargeable batteries and old cell phones in RBRC collection boxes located in all Circuit City stores nationwide. Circuit City will recycle used rechargeable batteries commonly found in cordless electronic products such as: cordless phones, laptop computers, PDAs, digital cameras, and cell phones.

"We are pleased that Circuit City has decided to integrate RBRC's rechargeable battery and cell phone recycling program into its stores," said Ralph Millard, executive vice president, RBRC. "We hope this relationship will help consumers understand the simple and easy ways they, too, can protect the environment, not just on Earth Day, but every day."

"At Circuit City, we are committed to offering the latest technology and electronic solutions. Now we can also provide an opportunity for our customers to help protect the environment," said Ron Cuthbertson, senior vice president of supply chain and inventory management at Circuit City. "RBRC's Call2Recycle program has made it easy for our customers to recycle while shopping in our stores- it is another service we are proud to offer."

About RBRC

The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) is a nonprofit, public service organization dedicated to rechargeable battery and cell phone recycling. There are over 30,000 retail, business, and community collection locations that participate in RBRC's rechargeable battery recycling program. RBRC is funded by more than 300 manufacturers and marketers of portable rechargeable batteries and products. RBRC's public education campaign and recycling program, Call2Recycle(TM), is the result of the rechargeable power industry's commitment to conserve natural resources and prevent cell phones and rechargeable batteries from entering the solid waste stream. Cell phones collected through the Call2Recycle program will be recycled or refurbished and resold when possible with a portion of the proceeds benefiting select charities. Contributions or gifts to RBRC are not tax deductible. For more information, call 1-877-2-RECYCLE or visit http://www.call2recycle.org .
