CommScope Scores Wireless Industry First with Introduction of 50-ohm 1-5/8" Aluminum Transmission Cable
9 April 2006
CommScope, Inc., (NYSE: CTV) a world leader in cable and connectivity solutions, today announced the completion of its aluminum 50-ohm Extremeflex(R) transmission line system with the introduction of its new Extremeflex (FXL 1873) 1-5/8" diameter cable. CommScope Wireless now has a unique portfolio of aluminum transmission cables to serve the industry. The Extremeflex wireless cables build upon a patented smooth-wall cable construction and feature a revolutionary aluminum outer conductor. They are designed for wireless transmission applications and come in a range of sizes and configurations, from small diameter jumper assemblies to large diameter trunk cables. Wireless customers can now take advantage of aluminum's characteristics that include easier installation, lighter weight, greater flexibility and industry-leading performance. Two major U.S. carriers installed Extremeflex FXL 1873 at test sites and found that it satisfied their performance and reliability standards. "Results from these recent U.S.-based field trials prove that an aluminum transmission line system is a good alternative for carriers that typically specify traditional copper cable," said Ted Hally, CommScope Executive Vice President and Carrier General Manager. "Our customers have installed the smaller diameter Extremeflex cables in thousands of cell sites across the U.S. for the past three years with excellent results. Many of them have requested a larger diameter aluminum trunk cable, too. With the addition of our new larger FXL 1873 cable, which is the trunk size most often specified in wireless networks, carriers now have an aluminum alternative for nearly every wireless application." Along with high performance, Extremeflex aluminum cables are easier to install, with tools and connectors that are fully interchangeable with CommScope's line of Cell Reach(R) copper 50-ohm cables. "Our aluminum Extremeflex and copper Cell Reach cables use the same tools and installation techniques," Hally continued. "Since no additional tools or training are required, interoperability is a key benefit for installers and carriers alike. This interchangeability saves time and money for everyone." The CommScope cable and connector design virtually eliminates water ingress, which can be a major cause of downtime on a cell site. The watertight design also lowers life cycle cost by reducing ongoing maintenance costs. "Carriers value lower maintenance costs, while cable installers facing demanding installations appreciate the lighter weight and conformability that aluminum provides," noted Hally. "We have also found pricing of our aluminum cables to be more stable when compared to the recent fluctuating market price for copper cables." In addition, the Extremeflex aluminum cable line's electrical, mechanical and environmental specifications meet or exceed traditional copper cable performance while maintaining low attenuation loss, providing superior shielding and minimizing intermodulation that often occurs in high radio frequency (RF) environments. The Extremeflex line is available in 1/2", 7/8", and 1-1/4" sizes in addition to the new 1-5/8" cable size. CommScope also offers a 1/2" super flexible cable that works well in cabinets or shelters where complex routing is common. Cell Reach and Extremeflex smooth-wall transmission line cables are approved for outdoor or in-building riser-rated applications and backed by a 10-year warranty. CommScope Wireless is ISO-9001 and TL-9000 certified. Standard CommScope services include on-site tech support, free regional installer training, 24-hour phone support, user-friendly, on-line purchasing of select products, and the industry's only dedicated cable transport fleet within the continental U.S. About CommScope CommScope (NYSE: CTV) (http://www.commscope.com) is a world leader in the design and manufacture of "last mile" cable and connectivity solutions for communication networks.
