Siemens Brings WayMAX@vantage Solution to U.S. Operators in Time for Upcoming Federal Spectrum Auctions

Boca Raton, Fla., Apr 5, 2006, Siemens Communications Inc. today announced the U.S. availability of its Siemens® WayMAX@vantageTM wireless solution, just in time for operators to take advantage of the soon-to-be-released federal allocations of broadband wireless spectrum that will be auctioned for the deployment of commercially advanced wireless services, including emerging third-generation (3G) mobile network services.
The Siemens WayMAX@vantage portfolio helps U.S. network operators cost-effectively deliver triple-play services - voice, data and video - over wide areas. The Siemens portfolio is one of the first WiMAX Forum-certified access solutions that includes base stations, interoperability with products from three major customer premises equipment (CPE) chipset vendors and outdoor-mounted CPE, as well as monitoring and control systems.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently announced plans to auction 90 megahertz of advanced wireless services spectrum - at 1,710 to 1,755 megahertz and at 2,110 to 2,155 megahertz - to facilitate rapid deployments of broadband technologies such as innovative 3G voice and data services. The spectrum will be available for commercial operators as early as June, according to the FCC."Business and consumer demand for new, advanced wireless services - including 3G and local area networks (LANs), such as those using Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity) - is considered by many to be an engine for future growth in American and global economics," according to a January Congressional Research Service report, Wireless Technology and Spectrum Demand: Advanced Wireless Services.
The solution s Wireless Integration Platform (WIP) includes portals for authentication, subscriber management and back-end services. The Siemens WayMAX@vantage solution is capable of supporting a number of applications such as last-mile broadband connections, wireless digital subscriber line (DSL) services, voice over Internet protocol (VoIP), hotspot and cellular backhaul, and high-speed enterprise connectivity for small, midsized and home-based businesses.

The WayMAX@vantage solution flexibly adapts to a range of frequency channels, from 1.75 megahertz to 14 megahertz, and the solution is adaptive up to 64 quadtrature amplitude modulation (QAM) - one of the highest capacities in the industry. WayMAX@vantage software optimizes system parameters for different application traffic demand and user position within a cell. The solution is capable of assigning different priorities to different user groups.
With industry-leading power and system gain, the Siemens WayMAX@vantage portfolio may help operators minimize the number of base stations needed. This may translate into reduced capital and operational expenses for the operators.
Siemens broadband wireless access portfolio includes a modular multi-standard base station (MBS) solution based on GERAN and UTRAN. This ultimately allows for the integration of all mobile communication technologies into this MBS system, from GSM and EDGE to 3G/W-CDMA and HSPA, right through to WiMAX and Flash-OFDM.
