Frontseat s Search for Greatest New Zealand Painting turnsup Ten Big Ones The top ten finalists in the Search forthe Greatest New Zealand Painting have been unveiled on TVOne s arts show Frontseat (Sunday 2nd April), and members ofthe public are now invited to vote on which is New Zealand sgreatest painting. The top ten span 102 years of paintingin New Zealand and include four Colin McCahons and two byRita Angus. Nine of the top ten are held in publiccollections. The oldest dates back to the 19th Century, themost recent is a 1993 Bill Hammond. Over the past sixweeks hundreds of New Zealanders -- including art experts andenthusiasts such as Jenny Gibbs, Wystan Curnow, GregoryO Brien, Mark Amery, James Wallace, Christina Barton andMarshall Seifert -- have nominated works that they believestand as a pinnacle of painting craft in our land. Thesenominations, and the finalists, can be seen on Frontseat swebsite (www.frontseat.co.nz) and on the websites of thepublic collections they are held in. The only criteriafor Frontseat s Search For The Greatest New Zealand Paintingwere that it must be a painting by a New Zealander, or apainting created in New Zealand. "It may sound like a daftidea given that no two paintings are alike, and we know itwill create controversy, but we wanted to celebrate the Kiwicanvas and find out what it takes to make a great painting,"says Frontseat host Oliver Driver. Dunedin gallery ownerMarshall Seifert and art critic and curator Wystan Curnowsubmitted a "top 10" and "top 11" respectively at thebeginning of the search. Upon hearing of the finalists,Curnow remarked "It s a pretty timid outcome. Four McCahonsis commendable I suppose, although in the company he s beengiven to keep, it should probably be more than that andbetter McCahons. I have to say I m really upset that theFrontseat audience endorsed only one of MY 'top 11 ; I don tknow what that s going to do for my art boffin status." Seifert congratulated New Zealanders on showing goodtaste: "I m sure you ve surprised a legion ofheavy-breathers." He was pleased with the inclusion of RobinWhite and Bill Hammond in the top ten, but felt that thelack of a [Tony] Fomison and a [Toss] Woollaston waslamentable. "However, I m sure that history will remedythat." Oliver Driver said the poll had "stimulated debatesabout what constitutes a great painting, and what theseworks say about our identity, the growth of art practice inour country, and what value we place on art in our ownhomes". Seifert agreed. "You can t discuss something likethis without being aware of the great sadness of going intoNew Zealand homes that contain no paintings". He said thesimplest start for remedying this was for New Zealanders toframe and admire their own children s art. The publicnow has four weeks to cast their vote to elevate one of theten finalists to the number one position. Voting closes onApril 27th and the results will be revealed on Sunday 30thApril on Frontseat, TV One. Voting can be done online atwww.frontseat.co.nz, by email (letters@frontseat.co.nz) orby writing to Frontseat, PO Box 6185, Te Aro, Wellington.
