31 March 2006

AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE

29 March 2006

Newpay and display machines ready to go

Pay and displayparking will begin operating in parts of Grafton, Newmarketand Parnell on Monday, 3 April.

Motorists are reminded tocheck the signs when they park, so they are familiar withthe new parking restrictions.

The council has beeninstalling new machines in streets around the AucklandDomain since the end of January. The move to pay anddisplay aims to increase car park turnover and compliancewith parking restrictions in this high-demand area, so morepeople can access parking.

"We had hoped to have the newpay and display machines operating in February," says ChrisGeerlings, Auckland City's parking servicesmanager.

"There is a complex fibre optic cable network inthis area, which has meant some delays with installing themachines."

The new technology pay and display machinesoffer payment for parking by text message, credit card orcoin. Vodafone and Telecom customers can both use theservice, and Visa, Mastercard and AMEX credit cards are allaccepted.

"Aucklanders have really taken to txt and creditcard payment for parking. It's part of a package oftransport solutions for Auckland.

"Paying for parking isa reality in any big city, but we want to make it as easy aspossible for people to pay, to take the hassle out it asmuch as we can," says Mr Geerlings.

Pay and displayparking is accompanied by new parking time-restrictions,which aim to improve access to the area and provide a betterbalance of parking for residents, businesses andrecreational visitors.
