NETGEAR s® Embedded Multimedia Terminal Adapter Achieves PacketCable® 1.5 Certification From CableLabs®

30 March 2006

NETGEAR Embraces Rapid Market Demand for Embedded Multimedia Terminal Adapters (E-MTAs)

SANTA CLARA, Calif. a March 27, 2006 a NETGEAR, Inc. (Nasdaq: NTGR), a worldwide provider of technologically advanced, branded networking products, today announced that its new Embedded Multimedia Terminal Adapter or E-MTA (Model EM612) received CableLabs® PacketCable® 1.5 Certification for the product s adherence to rigorous standards in certification wave 41, concluded this month.

NETGEAR s Embedded Multimedia Terminal Adapter (EM612) integrates a cable modem with a PacketCable Internet Protocol (IP) phone adapter. The NETGEAR product is a DOCSIS® 2.0 modem with one USB port and one Ethernet port for data traffic, and two ports for PacketCable Voice over IP (VoIP).

PacketCable is a CableLabs-led project that was initiated by cable operators in order to define a common platform that may be used to deliver advanced real-time multimedia services over a two-way cable plant. Cable Television Laboratories (CableLabs) is a non-profit research and development consortium. Built on top of the industry s DOCSIS 1.1 (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications) cable modem infrastructure, PacketCable networks use IP technology as the basis for highly capable multimedia architecture. A DOCSIS network with PacketCable extensions enables cable operators to deliver data and voice traffic efficiently and economically using a single high-speed, quality-of-service (QoS)-enabled broadband architecture.

Said David James, NETGEAR s director of broadband service provider products, "With the E-MTA market growing at a breakneck pace, we re encouraged by CableLabs certification of our Embedded Multimedia Terminal Adapter as having met their strict requirements for protocol conformance. NETGEAR remains committed to offering cable operators cost-effective, technologically sophisticated and easy-to-setup solutions to better serve user needs."

With most major Multiple-System Operators (MSOs) in North America now providing IP telephony services, the cable industry s VoIP customer base reached 3.2 million late February, according to Phoenix industry research analyst firm Kinetic Strategies. As cable operators roll out VoIP services, shipments of voice modems worldwide increased 282% from 2004 to 2005, with E-MTAs experiencing soaring demand.

"CableLabs® Certified®" means that NETGEAR s Embedded Multimedia Terminal Adapter (EM612) has passed a series of tests for compliance with the PacketCable Specification and has thus demonstrated interoperable functionality with other CableLabs Certified devices.

NETGEAR s Embedded Multimedia Terminal Adapter (EM612) joins a broad portfolio of CableLabs-certified NETGEAR products that enable cable operators to offer advanced home networking services to their growing subscriber base. In December 2005, NETGEAR became the first company to receive a "three-way" certification for its Wireless Cable Voice Gateway (CVG824G), which earned PacketCable 1.1, DOCSIS 2.0, and Cable Home 1.1 certifications in wave 40.
