Samsung Laundry Featuring SilverCare(TM) Technology

26 March 2006

Samsung Electronics, one of the world's largest appliance and electronics manufacturers, expands its award-winning home appliance line into the new millennium with the introduction of the world's first washing machine to employ advanced SilverCare(TM) Technology. The new Samsung front-loading washer uses Silver Ions in its wash and rinse cycles to kill 99.9% of tested bacteria and sanitize laundry, all in cold water without the use of bleach.

An increased consumer demand for energy-saving products prompted Samsung to develop a system to use silver, widely known for its anti-microbial properties, in the wash water of its newest line of washing machines. Metallic silver atoms, electrolytically stripped of an electron, are injected during the wash and rinse cycles, allowing over 100 quadrillion silver ions -- which act as a super cleaning solution -- to penetrate deep into the fabric to sanitize clothing without the need for hot water or bleach.

In the United States, most laundry is washed in cold or warm water without bleach. Prominent scientists have shown that this commonly results in clean wet laundry with a significant microbial contamination. Samsung's SilverCare washer specifically targets the microbial contamination of the typical American washing methods.

Here's how it works: A grapefruit-sized device alongside the tub uses electrical currents to nano-shave two silver plates the size of large chewing gum sticks. The resulting positively charged silver atoms -- Silver ions (Ag+) -- are injected into the tub during the wash cycle. According to tests, this process removed or killed 99.9% of odor-causing bacteria. The specific microorganisms tested were two bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, and two fungi, Aspergillus niger ATCC 6275 and Penicillium citrinum ATCC 9849.

"Samsung is committed to being first to market with advanced technologies that benefit and enhance peoples lines, and the new washers with SilverCare technology are a perfect example," said Peter Weedfald, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing Consumer Electronics & North American Corporate Marketing, Samsung Electronics America, Inc. "We believe the demand for this technology will have a significant impact on our Home Appliance business and the entire industry."

Samsung's SilverCare sanitization process provides a 92% energy savings over hot water sanitization. SilverCare sanitization also helps keep your clothes looking their best and is gentler on clothes compared to hot water sanitization. Extra delicates such as blouses, shirts, or even lingerie can now be sanitized effectively in cold water without the harsh effects of hot water sanitization. And skin testing has shown SilverCare washed clothing to be hypoallergenic. The SilverCare silver plates carry a warranty of ten years or 3000 cycles (based on average loading and usage of 6 times per week), and can easily be replaced by a Service Technician if so needed.

Along with a large capacity of 3.79 cu ft, which can hold up to a king- size comforter, the front-loading washer is quieter and saves energy.

For exceptional washing performance, Samsung's SilverCare washing machine features two-step baffles. Samsung's up and down baffle surface is similar to a washboard, providing more cleaning action. Water flows through the holes, quickly wets the laundry, and helps the detergent spread evenly.

The machine's design includes a slanted drum for easy loading and unloading. The angled display panel located on the front provides easy control and the graphic digital-display control panel is clear and easy to use with minimum fuss. It has an algorithm interface for optimal selection of temperature and time for each load.

The new Samsung front-loading washing machine has a child lock safety feature and MyCycle feature, which allows the user to customize options and recall them. Matching Samsung dryers are available, and may be stacked with purchase of an accessory kit. Laundry pairs come in white and various colors.

The Samsung Washers with SilverCare Technology will have MSRP's from $1099 up to $1399.
