Adaptive Digital Introduces Its Open-Source G.PAK(TM) - A Reference VoIP DSP Application

2 March 2006

Adaptive Digital Technologies' (Adaptive Digital) Open G.PAK(TM) is a GUI configurable, open source reference application for VoIP DSP software applications. Built upon two previous generations of the G.PAK product; Open G.PAK brings with it the benefits of open source software.

The G.PAK(TM) product in its original conception consisted of two components: the VoIP DSP software and a Windows-Based configuration utility. The VoIP DSP software includes all the DSP functionality necessary for most VoIP applications from IP gateways to IP phones. A typical G.PAK configuration may include echo cancellation, tone detection and generation, conferencing, and a variety of voice codecs. By including only the components, channel types, and peripherals required by a specific application the G.PAK generates a customer specific downloadable DSP software image. By removing unneeded functionality, the DSP application fits into the most cost- effective DSP chip. Conceivably the G.PAK framework application tool can provide the customized downloadable image in mere minutes.

In some cases, this is the end of the story, but in other cases it is necessary to customize the G.PAK software beyond the capabilities of the automated configuration utility. For example, an application may require a custom algorithm or a custom interface.

Previous versions of G.PAK required any such customization to be done by Adaptive Digital. By incorporating Open Source into G.PAK(TM), Adaptive Digital has empowered its customers to take control of the DSP application by allowing them to modify the fully tested G.PAK source code themselves. This gives them a remarkable head start in their application development.

Open Source G.PAK is provided initially as a software development kit (SDK). The Open G.PAK SDK runs either on a Texas Instruments (TI) low-cost TMS320C6416 DSP Starter Kit (DSK) or a TI TMS320DM642 Evaluation Module (EVM), a video and imaging development platform. The kit includes the software framework, the G.PAK configuration utility, and evaluation versions of the core set of VoIP DSP algorithms. The kit is able to run VoIP endpoints capable of demonstrating VoIP phone calls between two G.PAK SDKs or between one G.PAK SDK and a production IP phone.

The kit allows the user to build different configurations of G.PAK. Once a suitable configuration has been built, the user can go one step further by modifying the source code and rebuilding the application using TI's Code Composer Studio(TM) Integrated Development Environment. The user can develop a DSP application using the DSK and port the application to his or her product target hardware when it is available.

Open Source G.PAK currently supports the following algorithms.

* G.711

* G.723

* G.729

* G.168 Echo Canceller

* Tone Detection

* Tone Generation

* VAD/CNG

* AGC

* Tone relay
