Verizon Wireless Presents 'Invest in Yourself' Seminar at Essex County's Babyland Family Services
26 February 2006
Continuing its commitment to domestic violence prevention and awareness, Verizon Wireless today presented a job training program at Babyland Family Services to help survivors of domestic violence develop and hone the skills they need to compete for jobs in today's marketplace. Babyland Family Services serves residents throughout Essex County. Called "Invest in Yourself," the program consists of seminars that focus on employment topics, such as interviewing, communications, networking and preparing effective resumes. Verizon Wireless female executives with experience in human resources, marketing and management present the seminars, which are based on the company's self-development course curriculum for employees. The program, created by Annette Lowther, the company's associate director of Human Resources in the New York Metro Region, has served as a model for similar programs offered to domestic violence victims by local Verizon Wireless employees across the Northeast. Lowther presented the seminar in Essex County this week. "For domestic violence survivors, beginning a job search is one of the first steps toward rebuilding their lives," Lowther said. "We hope to break down some of the barriers these women face and equip them with the skills needed to land jobs and become more independent." In addition to the employment seminar, Verizon Wireless last year awarded a $10,000 grant to the Babyland Family Services to furnish and equip a dedicated resource and counseling room for residents of their family shelter. The room was renovated with the help of the Junior League of Short Hills' Safe Haven Committee. Domestic violence prevention and education is Verizon Wireless' chief community focus. Invest in Yourself seminars are part of the company's broader HopeLine(R) program, created more than 10 years ago to put the company's wireless products and services to work to help domestic violence survivors. The cornerstone of the HopeLine program is the recycling of no-longer-used wireless phones, collected at Verizon Wireless Communications Stores nationwide. Phones are refurbished, recycled or sold and proceeds are donated to advocacy groups or used to purchase wireless phones for survivors. Phones that cannot be refurbished are disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. Over the past three years, Verizon Wireless has awarded more than $100,000 in HopeLine grants; donated free wireless phones, service and voice mailboxes; and launched community, business and educational awareness initiatives throughout the New York Metro area. Domestic violence advocacy groups interested in more information or scheduling a seminar may call 845-429-3839.
