24 February 2006 InternetNZ hits nail on head -Greens The Government should listen to proposals fromInternetNZ on reform of New Zealand's telecommunicationsregulatory framework, and make a decision based on what'sgood for New Zealand rather than what's palatable toTelecom, Green Party Information Technology SpokespersonNandor Tanczos says. "The Government has indicated that itintends to address the poor broadband situation in thiscountry, and that has been widely welcomed. "However thereis some concern that we will see a repeat of last time -threats from Telecom coupled with last-minute sweetenersthat result in more inaction. The current CommunicationsMinster David Cunliffe has a real opportunity to demonstratehis effectiveness, and I sincerely hope he doesso. "Proposals like InternetNZ's are welcome in thisdebate. Some interested parties have been intent onconfusing an issue that is already difficult for many peopleto understand. InternetNZ's proposals are a breath of freshair, because they clearly lay out some options. Inparticular, Nandor welcomes the fact that InternetNZ'sproposals take the debate beyond Local LoopUnbundling. "It seems obvious to me that the debate overLocal Loop Unbundling has been won. Now it is the otherparts of the reform package that we must focuson. "InternetNZ talks about the need for strongerwholesale service options for resellers of Telecom'sservices, starting with an unconstrained UBS (unbundledbitstream service), and the need to split Telecom'swholesale business off from its retail business, eitherthrough a firewalled division, or a separate company. Thesecomments are right on the money. "Clearly, Local loopUnbundling will not in itself fix all the problems. It needsto be part of a more comprehensive package. Proposals putforward on matters unrelated to the Local Loop Unbundlingissue were also welcome. "Local Loop Unbundling is anextremely important issue, and it is vital that theGovernment doesn't drop the ball. However, it's alsoimportant that securing New Zealand's digital future doesnot begin and end with this issue", Nandor says.
