IPI: FCC Can Free Telecom From Local Regulatory Obstacles;Files Telecom Franchise Comments to FCC
19 February 2006
The Institute for Policy Innovation (IPI), an independent, public-policy organization, filed comments this week to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding proposed rulemaking procedures on telecommunications franchise reform. According to George Pieler, IPI research fellow and one of three contributors to the IPI filing report, "The Federal Communications Commission has ample authority to exercise its powers under the Communications Act to strike a proper balance between national commerce and local prerogatives. Franchise reform, meaning the establishment of prudent standards for overriding unreasonable obstacles to free and open competition in telecom services at the local level, will create new markets and rapidly expand services for consumers all across the country. "We expect the Commission to articulate a standard that will benefit everyone while respecting the historic significance of municipal franchise regulation."
