Norton Healthcare Implements Wireless Point-of-Care Carts and Wall Mounts to Enhance Patient Care and Safety

Norton Healthcare, Kentucky's leading health care system and third largest private employer, and EnovateIT, the leading integrator of wireless mobile point-of-care workstations headquartered in Troy, Mich., have successfully deployed more than 600 mobile workstations, 300 computer wall stations, and 150 computer wall-mounted arms for patient data capture, establishing point-of-care access in all five of the system's not-for-profit hospitals.
More than 2,000 physicians on the medical staff, 3,000 nurses, respiratory care professionals and patient care technicians in the general care and intensive care units of Norton Hospital, Kosair Children's Hospital, Norton Audubon Hospital, Norton Southwest Hospital and Norton Suburban Hospital currently use the EnovateIT mobile workstations and wall-mounted system solutions.
The system wide initiative launched in mid-2003 and was fully implemented by the end of 2005. The EnovateIT wireless workstations were a vital part of the conversion to a Meditech electronic medical records system (EMR).
Early in 2003, approximately 1,000 Norton Healthcare employees provided mobile device selection feedback during an evaluation period. Employees represented a wide range of functional areas, including patient care, clinical informatics, information systems and technology, occupational health, biomedical engineering and infection control. During the selection and review process, EnovateIT defined Norton Healthcare's technology and clinical staff needs to determine which products would create the best solution for the health care system. The solution was a combination of proven products from multiple manufacturers that improve patient care and staff efficiency.
