Hughes Network Systems Awarded Contract by Crowley for Broadband Wireless Access System

20 January 2006

Hughes Network Systems, LLC (Hughes), the world's leading provider of broadband satellite solutions and a major supplier of broadband wireless systems, announced that it has signed a contract with broadband carrier Crowley Data Poland to supply the Hughes AB9400 point-to-multipoint broadband wireless system.

Crowley will operate the AB9400 LMDS system in their licensed 26 GHz spectrum to complement their existing legacy LMDS network. The AB9400 offers full QoS and greater IP bandwidth than other 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz broadband wireless alternatives, thus allowing Crowley to address the growing market for higher capacity services. Installation in Warsaw commenced in January 2006.

"Crowley is on a fast growth track, with the number of corporate and midsize clients now exceeding 2,500," said Zdzislaw Wisniewski, technical director at Crowley. "The Hughes AB9400 system has the advanced features and capabilities that will enable us to provide the latest high-capacity IP services to our customers. We are using pre-WiMax products for small enterprises that need DSL-type bandwidth, but corporate customers who need 5+ Mbps with guaranteed QoS are better served by the Hughes 26 GHz solution. The combination of dynamic bandwidth allocation and Hughes' Dynamic Adaptive Modulation allows us to further penetrate a dynamically growing market and to provision a customer with high capacity at very economical costs."

The AB9400 LMDS features include:

* Full Quality of Service (QoS) support for IP and asynchronous transfer

mode (ATM) traffic;

* Modular, scalable central base station configurations;

* Simultaneous E1, fractional E1, ATM, and IP traffic at both the

subscriber and hub sites;

* Greater capacity using 16-QAM modulation;

* Additional capacity gains by software enabled Dynamic Bandwidth

Allocation and Dynamic Adaptive Modulation; and

* Improved range and better performance during rain fades than competing

LMDS systems.

"We are proud to add Crowley to our growing list of customers for the Hughes AB9400 LMDS solution. It is further evidence of our customers' confidence in our system's capabilities, which far exceeds terrestrial DSL data rates and quality of service," said Thomas S. Hsu, senior vice president and general manager, Broadband Carrier Networks division at Hughes.

"With advanced Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation schemes and QoS processing, our AB9400 enables Crowley to serve up to 10 times more customers in its allocated spectrum compared to competing LMDS systems. Crowley will be able to offer services such as 5 Mbps guaranteed throughput, with 30 Mbps burst rate, in contrast to DSL, which typically offers only 2 Mbps maximum burst rate, and zero or very low guaranteed bandwidth," said Vinay Patel, senior marketing director, Hughes Broadband Carrier Networks division.
