Federal and Private Sector Advances in Health Information Technology at the 3rd Annual World Health Care Congress, April 17-19, 2006
19 January 2006
Leaders in the field of health information technology (IT) will convene at the 3rd Annual World Health Care Congress, April 17-19, to discuss the technology, policy, business and financing issues critical to the development and implementation of successful health care IT systems during the next decade. A government mandate to deploy improved health IT by 2014 places a heavy burden on health care organizations to use technology -- including the linchpin health IT infrastructure, the electronic medical record (EMR) -- to lower costs, reduce medical errors, improve quality of care, and provide better information to patients and physicians. World Health Care Congress keynote presentations, invitational executive forums and executive seminars will examine IT topics critical to hospitals, health systems, and health plans, including: * Practical models to address the challenges of funding, information privacy, and interoperability of health IT. * EMR implementation strategies to achieve positive return on investment (ROI), improved provider-patient communication, and optimization of acute episodic and chronic care. * What current capabilities exist to leverage analytics with EMR data. * How organizations are evaluating major technology investments beyond the EMR. * What the future prospects are for individualized patient care and biomedical informatics. World Congress is pleased to feature the keynote presentation, "Wiring the Nation," an expert commentary on techniques for accelerating adoption of health IT, reducing avoidable costs, and ensuring information privacy. Also discussed will be whether the American Health Information Community (AHIC), an advisory group aiding in the creation of a framework for interoperability of health IT, will adequately address needed improvements in health care quality, cost, and access. "Wiring the Nation" incorporates presentations by Dr. David J. Brailer, Coordinator of National Health Information Technology for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; Dr. Glenn D. Steele Jr., President and CEO, Geisinger Health System and Chair, Section for Health Care Systems of the American Hospital Association; Ron Ponder, former Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer for WellPoint, Inc., and one of Computerworld magazine's 100 premium IT leaders of 2005; and Dr. Robert Pearl, CEO of The Permanente Medical Group, the largest medical group in the nation. Presenters will discuss current health IT initiatives within their organizations, such as The Permanente Medical Group's "E-mail Your Doctor" program, which enables 3.2 million members in Northern California to communicate safely and directly by e-mail with most of the group's 6,000 physicians. "In light of the heightened focus on the development of a successful health IT infrastructure in the United States, we are honored to feature some of the most renowned speakers in this area," said World Health Care Congress President Nicole Garratt. "We believe this diverse set of perspectives -- government, health system, physician group and health plan -- allows World Health Care Congress delegates to understand the key implementation challenges more broadly and, therefore, work toward a collaborative solution." The 3rd Annual WHCC's two-day summits will additionally feature sessions on timely issues for health system and hospital CEOs, CFOs, CMOs, and CIOs/CTOs, such as assessing the fiscal impact of Medicare reform and redefining operational excellence in health care based on gains seen in other industries.
