Mainstream Data Comments on Content Delivery Trends for 2006
30 December 2005
Mainstream Data, a leading content delivery solutions provider for the collection, distribution, and display of digital media, assessed its 2005 performance with a view toward the future. Mainstream CEO, Scott Calder, referred to 2005 as a "breakthrough year" for the Salt Lake City-based company. Citing a combination of new business awards from long-standing clients in the media industry and a major contract win in the digital cinema marketplace that will reshape the way content is delivered to movie theatres in the United States, Mr. Calder forecasts a strong and profitable 2006 for the company.
Leading News Agencies & Financial Companies Add New Applications: UPI & Reuters
During 2005 Mainstream Data continued to serve the world's leading news agencies and financial companies, including Bloomberg, Dialog (a Thomson Company), the European Pressphoto Agency, IDC ComStock, and Reuters. Mainstream provides networks and management support services for these companies, enabling them and other content providers to deliver breaking news, real-time stock quotations, digital images, audio, and video content more efficiently. The Mainstream-provided services include centrally managed IP-based information delivery via DVB satellite broadcast, two-way VSAT networks, and terrestrial connections, in addition to sophisticated software applications for the capture, manipulation, and display of compelling content.
Several of Mainstream's new contract awards in 2005 represented new service offerings for the company and reflect recent trends in the expansion of content delivery around the globe. For example, Mainstream was recently selected to distribute UPI's news services via satellite to the Middle East. UPI's services delivered by Mainstream are part of its platform offering news, analysis, and industry information to decision-makers and end users in English, Spanish, and Arabic.
Prior to the UPI award, Mainstream also announced that Reuters Television had selected its technology services division-MDI Technologies-to manage the North American rollout of Reuters World News Express (WNE), a new file-based video news delivery system. Mainstream supports the WNE implementation and roll out with project management, phone and field support services, installation and maintenance of satellite equipment, multimedia server staging and video display installation. Mainstream's MDI group was formed this year to meet a growing demand from digital media and enterprise communication customers for outsourced end-to-end content distribution network services and was chosen by Reuters because of its extensive experience overseeing large scale and complex content distribution network projects.
Carrying the Ball -- and the Scores -- for ESPN SportsTicker(TM)
On behalf of ESPN SportsTicker and sports fans who live and die for news on their favorite teams, Mainstream was selected to transmit real-time scores, breaking sports news, statistics, previews, recaps, and features to media points, sports venues, and other sports information consumers using its state-of-the-art DVB satellite and proprietary MediasNet Internet delivery platforms. During 2005 Mainstream completed its rollout as SportsTicker's exclusive broadcast distribution network.
Technicolor Award Key Win for Mainstream
A significant highlight for the year was Mainstream's announcement in July that it had entered into an agreement with Thomson's Technicolor Digital Cinema business to provide an end-to-end high-speed digital satellite network for the distribution of pre-show content to theatres across North America. Mainstream Data was named as the provider for North American satellite distribution services for Technicolor's SkyArc(TM) system.
The proprietary Technicolor SkyArc network distributes digital pre-show program content for Screenvision, a leading cinema advertising company in the United States. SkyArc represents a significant step forward for cinema advertising, including the first completely high definition cinema advertising network in North America. As part of its rollout, Technicolor Digital Cinema has deployed a network of Mainstream Data's DVB+(TM) satellite receivers with associated reliable file delivery applications in Screenvision partner theatres.
Referring to the Technicolor win, Calder stated, "We were very fortunate in that we were able to outdistance some extremely good competition to win the business and were given an opportunity to be a central element of the digital cinema movement."
Looking Ahead: Content Remains King and Its Providers Will Find Niches
Looking ahead, Calder said that his company's philosophy of a "technology-agnostic transmission-and-application" platform will continue to be the key in assisting content providers as they expand their offerings. "Companies need to be able to tailor technology solutions to meet their precise requirements. Mainstream's offerings allow for that customization, but use core technology which we have spent more than two decades perfecting." Calder added, "We have assembled the building blocks to create cost-effective distribution networks that require absolutely no compromise. Digital signage, distance learning, and digital cinema companies live or die based on their ability to deliver con tent reliably and cost effectively, and no one can help them do that better than we can."
Also key to penetrating new vertical markets is strategic collaboration with key partners in the industry. "These partnerships-about which we will hear much more in 2006-focus on bringing complete packaged solutions to the marketplace," said Calder. "We recognize the value of synergies with segment-leading companies that will allow us to work together to meet and exceed customer requirements." Mainstream expects to announce some of these new partnership agreements in early 2006.
