CDG Congratulates Telefonica on its Launch of 1xEV-DO Services in Venezuela

23 December 2005

The CDMA Development Group (CDG) (www.cdg.org) congratulated Telefonica Moviles today on its commercial deployment of 3G CDMA2000(r) 1xEV-DO services across major markets in Venezuela. Under the brand name "Play 3G," the operator will offer its customers broadband wireless multimedia services. This represents the carrier's fourth EV-DO deployment in the region.

"1xEV-DO is the most advanced wireless data technology commercially deployed today, offering operators a significant time-to-market advantage in capitalizing on the growing demand for data services," said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDMA Development Group. "We applaud Telefonica Moviles on its leadership in bringing innovative solutions and services to the market."

Optimized for data, CDMA2000 1xEV-DO delivers speeds up to 2.4 Mbps and 600-800 kbps in commercial networks, enabling operators to offer multimedia services such as TV broadcasts, audio downloads and 3D games. In some countries, including in Latin America, the technology is also used as an alternative to fixed broadband Internet solutions. 1xEV-DO services have become a significant revenue generator for operators; for example, data accounts for 31% of an SK Telecom 1xEV-DO subscriber's monthly bill.

Building on the existing capabilities of 1xEV-DO, operators will be able to seamlessly migrate to next generation all-IP wireless technologies. 1xEV-DO Rev A, commercially available next year, offers VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) and significantly higher data rates (3.1 Mbps in the forward link and up to 1.8 Mbps in the reverse link in a single channel) allowing operators to further differentiate their services offerings, while reducing the cost of delivery.

First launched in 2002, 1xEV-DO has been rapidly expanding worldwide. Today, there are 30 commercial networks and 36 more are being deployed across the Americas, Asia and Europe, including 12 commercial and 9 in deployment in the Latin America and Caribbean region. The worldwide subscriber base will exceed 25 million in 2005. There are currently 150 1xEV-DO devices ranging from handsets with advanced functionality to PDAs and PC cards.

More information on CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is available on the CDG Web site at www.cdg.org.
