Value-Added Services Needed to Enhance Enterprise Communications Solutions
21 December 2005
Owing to the upswing in the economy and the consequent expansion strategies and outsourcing trends of companies, there is a greater need to communicate and collaborate among employees and customers globally. This need, in turn, drives advancements in enterprise communication technologies. Stand-alone enterprise communication systems are not suited to the complexity of current business practices. While most companies offer software and hardware solutions, there is an urgent need to bundle enterprise communication with business process executions to improve business productivity. "Enterprises need to deploy value-added features such as presence technologies and video and audio applications to instant messaging capabilities to ensure substantial return on investment on the voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) deployments," say Frost & Sullivan (http://www.ti.frost.com ) Research Analysts Amit Jain and Vedavalli Rangan. "Providing services in this domain is likely to generate more revenue compared to providing hardware or software solutions." Despite the slew of features and technologies, the market still needs to focus intensely on research and development to compete with mature telephony technologies. Reducing high deployment time, enhancing voice quality over Internet protocol (IP) networks, improving scalability and reliability and facilitating communication over radio frequencies are the factors that need to be addressed effectively. The market needs real-time suites that are easier to install, use, and manage. "Research and development is needed for faster deployment, innovative delivery and flexible implementation of applications," notes Mr. Jain. "Research efforts need to focus on developing software that will be economically feasible." Communication Server Suite (CSS), for example, is an IP telephony software developed by a Finnish organisation. It provides unified IP telephony solutions for Expert Communications of both fixed and mobile users. "Resorting to terminal rationalisation wherein each user is provided only a single terminal helps in addressing user interface and deployment challenges," remarks Ms. Rangan. "This effectively eliminates the hassles associated with numerous telephony extensions and facilitates optimal use of the appropriate telephone network." Developers of communication technologies and applications need to adhere to open standards so that customers are not locked to a single solution. Interoperability across multi-vendor solutions is achieved by following a standards based approach to system design. Since instant messaging, VoIP and audio/video conferencing are powerful business communication tools that are becoming increasingly popular, service providers are looking to establish a universal protocol such as session initiation protocol (SIP) that enables interoperability between all providers. Overall, Europe is witnessing numerous product launches. Companies have developed Internet applications such as enterprise connectivity software, messaging and conferencing solutions that enable the integration of mainframe communication protocols with IP networks. Other notable innovations include solutions enabling the creation of bundled voice-video-data and fixed-mobile converged services. Advances in Software for Enterprise Communication is part of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) vertical subscription service. This Technical Insights study provides an overview of the advances in software for enterprise communication. The discussion revolves around two broad categories such as Store and Forward systems and Real-Time Communication systems. It includes sections on technology primer, myths, adoption benefits, and application areas. It also details the factors impacting the technology such as technology challenges, technology drivers and restraints corroborated against the innovations and developments in this domain. Executive summaries and analyst interviews are available to the press. Developers/end-users/industry participants interested in the technology innovations, trends and analysis relating to the broad area of software advances in enterprise communication domain may send an email to Janina Hillgrub, Corporate Communications, at Janina.Hillgrub@frost.com. Please also include the following information: your full name, company name, title, contact telephone number, contact fax number, and e-mail address.
