Maryland-Based CharityHelp International Uses Technology to Build Relationships Between Donors and Afghan Orphans

8 December 2005

What are people looking for in a charity these days? Everyone has been inundated with requests for donations, both financial and material, but how does one decide where to send hard-earned dollars?

Donors want to know exactly where their dollars are going and want to see the results that their money is helping to achieve. One Maryland-based charity is using technology to build relationships between donors and recipients.

CharityHelp International (CHI) and the Afghan Women’s Mission launched a web-based sponsorship program for Afghan children. Donors can now sponsor children in orphanages operated by the oldest women’s rights group in Afghanistan, the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA). Using the rapidly-expanding availability of low-cost communications in Afghanistan, CHI allows sponsors to communicate DIRECTLY with these children and their caretakers via email to change lives and build real relationships.

Sponsoring families welcome a new child into their homes by exchanging photos, writing emails, and keeping track of their child’s health, education, and well being. To sponsor a child, help bring more children from homelessness to homes, or learn more about Afghan orphans, visit www.charityhelp.org/rawa.

“RAWA’s orphanages are very special,” says anthropologist Jennifer Hartley, Ph.D., who has visited the orphanages to document the children’s stories. “It is amazing to observe these children, who have endured such loss, blossoming under RAWA’s care. If we truly want to see a peaceful, democratic Afghanistan, we need to directly support the well-being of its children, and RAWA does this beautifully.” Hartley has assembled an exhibit of artwork created by the orphans, entitled “With our Own Eyes,” which will debut at the Baltimore launch.

CHI provides organizations such as RAWA with computer equipment, expertise, and start-up funds to create their own online sponsorship programs. “Small, indigenous organizations offer creative, practical solutions to the problems facing their societies. They rarely have the means to share their visions with others around the world who could lend critical financial support. CHI puts essential internet tools to use the internet in the hands of these grassroots organizations so they can use this technology to help generate sustainable income for their programs and build relationships with their donors” Stevers says.
