Web 2.0, This Time it’s About More Than Technology
6 December 2005
In the last 6 months, 26 year old David Newberger has been watching the formation of what people have calling Web 2.0. At first it looked like the last technology bubble. But there is something different about what people are calling Web 2.0. This time it seems like Web 2.0 is more about consumers and less about technology. It is also about people and community or at least this is what David Newberger, Owner of BlackDot Ventures says.
“When I first heard the term web 2.0 I cringed like most technologists. Now that I have had time to study it and watch the trends I can see the term actually has meaning now. It is not the first buzz word to morph into something that has actual value.” he said.
He follows with “The driving force this time is what the consumer wants and not what a company thinks the consumers needs. With the consumer in the drivers’ seat we will see a lot of change in the coming years.”
Mr. Newberger also points out that there is still a large chance this new bubble will burst if not cared for properly and quick deflation of the technology bubble of the late 90’s will return.
“It would only take a few more venture capital companies funding new startups to put the technology field in the danger zone again. We must tread softly with these new technologies and let the technologies form around what the consumer wants and not what we think they want.”
He continues, “If we nurture this idea of web 2.0 it could be the dawning of a new age, one that I am beginning to call the ‘Innovation Age’. This new age will be more about the ideas and thinking of the global community and will put profits second. This would signal a large shift in the global economy.”
