Scil Technology to Present at Medtech Insight's Dallas, TX "IN SPINE & ORTHOPEDICS: Strategic Partnering and Investing in Musculoskeletal Technology"

Scil Technology has announced that it will be a presenter at Medtech Insight's "IN SPINE & ORTHOPEDICS" Conference, taking place November 2-3, 2005 at The Westin Stonebriar Resort in North Dallas, TX.
Scil Technology is a German biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of dental and orthopaedic tissue regeneration products based on a combination of growth factors and in vivo degradable biomaterials. At the conference, Irina Staatz-Granzer, MD of Scil Technology, will be presenting data concerning ST01, a regenerative bone substitute material for spinal fusion, and also ST03a, the first of the Company's cartilage repair product candidates.
ST01 is an artificial bone substitute material for lumbar, thoracic and cervical spinal fusion and related procedures. The product is based on a ceramic biomaterial coated with a recombinant human growth factor. The validated growth factor encourages the growth of bone to replace the synthetic biomaterial, which is gradually resorbed over time. Earlier this year ST01 established proof of concept in a preclinical study with highly favourable results.
The cartilage repair projects are based on the highly specific cartilage growth factor (CD-RAP) and target traumatic (ST03a) and degenerative (ST03b, Osteoarthritis) cartilage defects. CD-RAP stimulates the matrix synthesis in primary chondrocytes and influences the action of BMP-2 and TGF-(beta)3 during mesenchymal stem cell differentiation, supporting the chondrogenic phenotype while inhibiting osteogenic differentiation. Moreover, it is involved in the control of inflammatory cytokine expression occurring in damaged cartilage.
ST03a successfully completed a preclinical study demonstrating that the growth factor stimulates the repair of cartilage defects in adult animals and that it plays a critical role in the maintenance of cartilage tissue by preventing undesired ossification.
