Japan External Trade Organization Presents Business Strategy Forum 2005

27 October 2005

As ongoing changes in Asia's manufacturing dynamic coincide with an increasing global demand for integrated information communication technology (ICT) devices, finding the right markets and partners for success has become more critical than ever. Highlighting recent examples of successful U.S.-Japanese alliances, the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) will host the JETRO Business Strategy Forum 2005 on Nov. 3 at the Westin Santa Clara. The Forum, titled "IT Alliances: New Models for Adding Value to Global Operations," will bring together leading executives from the ICT industry to explore the impact of strategic partnerships between U.S. and Japanese companies on global strategy and operations.

"Recent alliances between U.S. and Japanese firms demonstrate a trend toward increased collaboration which is having a significant impact on worldwide operations," said Ichiro Sone, executive director of JETRO's San Francisco office. "In 2004, JETRO helped 38 U.S. companies open their offices in Japan and worked with more than 300 others to expand their operations and partnerships with Japan."

As manufacturing costs continue to decrease, U.S. companies in Asia are shifting their production of low-end products overseas to companies in China and India. At the same time these companies are developing and manufacturing their high-end products through their alliances in Japan. As demand for high-end information technology products and services continue to increase, strategic alliances in Japan between U.S. and Japanese technology companies are also expected to grow. Recent examples include Cisco Systems' new $12 million R&D center in Tokyo, Advanced Micro Devices' flash memory joint venture with Fujitsu, and Sun Microsystems' co-development and introduction of RFID technologies with Nippon Signal, a large Japanese electronics equipment manufacturer.

At the Forum, speakers from some of the industry's most highly-respected companies will discuss how their IT alliances are impacting business strategies and global operations. Speakers include:

-- Tony Bates, senior vice president, Carrier Core & Multi Services
Business Unit, Cisco Systems
-- Steve Domenik, general partner, Sevin Rosen Funds
-- Phil Keys, U.S. correspondent, Nikkei Electronics
-- Brad McManus, director, Panasonic Digital Concepts Center
-- Shoichi Osawa, manager, Strategic Venture Investment, Sony Corporation
of America
-- Hisami Ohshiba, managing member, JaM Japan Marketing LLC
-- Scott Swanstrom, director, MSS Platform Architecture Group, Advanced
Micro Devices
-- Hiroshi Tsukamoto, president, JETRO
-- Sandra Vaughan, senior vice president, Marketing and Products,
Proofpoint
-- Dr. Hiroshi Yasuda, general manager, Strategy & Alliances Group,
Toshiba Corporation

In addition to hosting forums, JETRO also offers market intelligence and business development assistance for U.S. companies seeking to successfully enter the Japanese market, including in-depth information on market and regulatory conditions in Japan, logistics assistance while in Japan and free local office space in Japan. JETRO also hosts partnering events at some of the largest industry trade shows in the United States, including CES, BIO, and CEATEC (in Tokyo).

"JETRO is here to serve as a one-stop resource for helping U.S. companies successfully enter and thrive in the competitive Japanese market," said Sone. "Securing partnerships with experienced, well-funded firms with a dependable track record and commitment to quality will become even more critical for U.S. companies as they seek out collaborative opportunities in Japan within the information technology sector."

This conference is organized by JETRO, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and the U.S. Department of State, and is co-organized by the Fabless Semiconductor Association (FSA). The conference will take place at November 3 from 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the Westin Santa Clara. For full conference details, visit http://www.jetro.org/forum2005 .
