Gorage.com Launches New Alternative to Online Auction Sites

22 July 2005

gorage.com (www.gorage.com), launched May 8, 2005 by Tempe, Arizona based Gorage, LLC, is the new online garage sale, classified and storefront shopping alternative. As opposed to the popular auction sites of the world, the site offers a flat rate pricing for listing items online that allows sellers to avoid paying auction commissions. This means greater profits for the sellers.

"We could not easily find a site that didn't charge a percentage to sell new and used goods online," said Dan Trujillo, co-founder and CEO. "We decided to use our own web design and development skills to offer an alternative with a much more affordable pricing structure. Basically, we wanted to give users a chance to keep more of the money they get for selling their items online."

The site started out as the solution to allow people to shop garage sales online. The idea was to build a website that allowed internet users the ability to "browse" people’s garage sales, and once they found something they like they could buy the item. This idea is what led to the name "gorage" -- go online to view garage sales.

Seeing that the website could be utilized for more than just an online garage sale, gorage.com evolved into a way for not only individuals but for businesses to sell their new or used items online. The site allows people to have an online storefront without the cost of creating their own e-commerce website or being limited to online auction parameters.

The pricing structure is based on the number of "selling spaces" that a user chooses. That group of selling spaces is known as the seller's "gorage." gorage.com pricing plans start at ten selling spaces and can be unlimited in the number of spaces available based on 30 day periods. Users can start selling online with their own gorage for as little as five dollars per period.

Other auction-based websites like eBay and Yahoo! Auctions are structured for sellers to pay a listing fee plus a sales commission (known as final value fees) on each item. In other words, an eBay seller could pay as much as $10 in total fees to sell a $200 item, where on gorage.com that same seller could sell an infinite number of those $200 items for $5 in the 30 day period. These savings for sellers could potentially mean lower prices for buyers looking for items on gorage.com because of substantially lower overhead.

gorage.com also makes it easier for buyers to search or browse through the site to find their items of interest. There are keyword searches and category listings on the main page of the website along with a browse function to look through available gorages. Buyers have the option to look for individual items using key information (item keywords and location of choice) or they can just browse through gorages (whether the gorage is in another state or as close to them as their own ZIP code). A buyer’s search for items or user gorages can be as far-reaching or as close to home as they choose.
