Psychemedics Corporation Praises FDA Action on Drug Tests

Psychemedics Corporation (Amex: PMD - News) today praised an FDA press release issued June 13, 2005 as an important step in protecting businesses, employees and other consumers from unreliable drug testing.

In its press release yesterday, the FDA clarified the need for drug tests used by businesses and consumers to be cleared or approved by the FDA. The FDA statement referred to regulations currently in place regarding laboratories performing drug screening for workplace and consumers and the need to utilize screening tests that have been reviewed by the FDA.

Raymond C. Kubacki, Chairman and CEO stated, "Protecting public safety is a critical role played by the FDA. All of Psychemedics' testing assays used in the workplace have been cleared by the FDA. We believe some laboratories that have not taken the important step in submitting their testing to the rigors of FDA review, have attempted to confuse businesses and other consumers in claiming that FDA clearance was not required for workplace testing. We applaud the FDA for clarifying this point in no uncertain terms. FDA review is an important safeguard for employees being tested."

The FDA press release stated that, "Tests that are not cleared by FDA may not meet current laboratory standards. When FDA has not reviewed a test product, consumers and businesses cannot have the same assurance that the results are correct as with an FDA-cleared test."
