The New York Botanical Garden Selects Archivas as Foundation on Which to Grow

13 June 2005

Archivas(TM), Inc., the leader in long term fixed content archiving, today announced that The New York Botanical Garden has selected its Archivas Cluster (ArC(TM)) as its long term storage foundation. Initially, ArC will be utilized in conjunction with the William and Lynda Steere Herbarium at the Botanical Garden's International Plant Science Center. This herbarium is widely recognized as a resource of international importance and contains over seven million specimens. In addition, ArC will be used to integrate the scientific research and images online that are currently stored on tens of thousands of disks, CDs and DVDs. Future plans for the ArC solution include its use in conjunction with the Botanical Garden's upcoming e-commerce efforts, as well as internal administrative business functions.

"We recognized that we had a really huge project ahead of us that would require a file system extremely fault-tolerant to both technical and human error, "said Josh Freeman, director of Information Technology at the Botanical Garden. "We also knew that we would need a great deal of current storage capacity, as well as the ability to grow in a virtually unlimited and uninterrupted fashion. We explored the other products currently on the market and found that only Archivas ArC delivered the levels of fault-tolerance we required at an attractive price point. Other vendors did offer small and mid-sized options, but they either offered storage capacity too small for our needs or were considerably more expensive than Archivas. Moreover, ArC is based on an open systems platform, so we know we are not locked into a proprietary solution that will limit us in ongoing technology investments."

"In the past, IT departments have never had to think of themselves as performing library functions but now they find themselves in the role of traditional archivists having to guarantee not only backups but the long-term access to information and images," said Gary Voight, chief executive officer of Archivas. "Today, sophisticated IT organizations, such as that led by Josh Freeman at The New York Botanical Garden, recognize that it is indeed a complex field and that there are practical considerations necessary in creating an online archive that delivers these guarantees. The Botanical Garden chose to implement Archivas' solution because it would integrate seamlessly with existing infrastructure and delivered the best method for building an online repository that would preserve and provide long-term access to its digital records. Moreover, it will protect these records against hardware failure and obsolescence, as well as user or application errors."

Added Freeman, "ArC is more than just a storage device - it allows us to organize our vast collections of research, field reports, movies and various other data and preserve all of it so that it can be easily accessed and understood today, tomorrow or a hundred years from now."

About Archivas Cluster (ArC)

The Archivas Cluster (ArC) is a digital archiving solution that stores, protects and manages fixed content. ArC enables users to have access to their archived data forever, even as content management applications and underlying hardware may change over time. Since ArC is hardware agnostic, it allows for the use of multiple brands of industry standard computer hardware in a single archive solution. In addition, ArC supports open, standard interfaces, thus appearing to applications or users as a file system, which many users are typically accustomed to working with. ArC delivers on the key attributes that any modern archive must provide, which includes the ability to easily and reliably ingest information, preserve information forever or as long as it is required, and provide easy access to the information over time.

With ArC v1.5, also announced today, this solution now delivers even greater levels of data ingestion and access performance, as well as unsurpassed search and indexing capabilities. ArC enables critical file contents search. This can provide important cost and time savings if, for example, a company is in a legal discovery process or if a doctor is attempting to recall a patient's medical history. Since ArC can store files that span multiple applications within the same archive, different file types relating to a single search can be found, which can be a very important consideration.

ArC is generally available and currently installed at customer sites across all major industry verticals. Current customers include the Cancer Therapy & Research Center, The New York Botanical Garden and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.
