United Kingdom's National Physical Laboratory Deploys Symmetricom Timing Solutions for Critical Accuracy

8 June 2005

Symmetricom (NASDAQ:SYMM), a worldwide leader in precise time and frequency products and services, today announced National Physical Laboratory (NPL), the United Kingdom's national standards organization that maintains the nation's standards for time, deployed Symmetricom's Domain Time II software to monitor the time servers for complete redundancy, reliability and critical accuracy in reporting time to the general public. They also rely on a wide range of Symmetricom precise timing solutions, including their hydrogen maser clock for maintaining standard time as well as four Symmetricom time servers for distributing time across its internal network.

“Our internal clocks and the Symmetricom time servers are as reliable as any time devices in the world, but given the fact that businesses rely on us for providing time, we needed an absolute guarantee of 100-percent accuracy and 24x7 access,” commented Peter Whibberley, senior research scientist for NPL. “Since our international reputation is at stake every time someone requests time from us, we wanted to build an extra level of redundancy into the system. Domain Time II time synchronization software monitors the time servers.”

NPL successfully maintains time with a Symmetricom maser clock and distributes time to the general public via radio signals and dial-up connections. After receiving multiple requests to provide time over the Internet, the organization converted two of the Symmetricom NTP (Network Time Protocol) time servers, giving the general public access to obtain the time.

NPL sought a redundancy solution that would inform them immediately if any problems occurred in the system as well as giving them total control as not to have to rely on any outside sources such as GPS (global positioning system). Having successfully utilized Symmetricom's hydrogen maser clock, as well as two TymServe 2100s and two NTS-200s network time servers, NPL's selection of Domain Time II time synchronization software to monitor the time servers came easy.

"National Physical Laboratory’s measurement research and innovation are respected around the world and play a key role in supporting the competitiveness of UK companies,” commented Paul Skoog, product marketing manager for Symmetricom. “With the high stakes of accuracy, it is critical they maintain precise, accurate and reliable time, with Symmetricom's timing solutions as the most reliable in the world.”
