SigmaTel Announces Availability of Development Kit Enabled with Microsoft Windows Media DRM 10
31 May 2005
SigmaTel, Inc. (NASDAQ: SGTL - News), today announces the availability of a development version of a portable digital audio software development kit (SDK) enabled with Microsoft's Windows Media Digital Rights Management 10 for portable devices (WMDRM 10) and Microsoft Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) supporting SigmaTel STMP35xx-based designs. Windows Media DRM10 is a flexible platform that makes it possible to protect and securely deliver subscription-based content for playback on a computer, portable device, or networked device. WMDRM 10 enables the seamless flow of content to almost any device, offers the widest range of purchase and rental options for digital media, and ensures the security of premium content as it flows from device to device. As the leading supplier of portable digital audio ICs, SigmaTel has integrated support for WMDRM 10 into the SigmaTel 35xx software development kits, thereby enabling our customers to produce products that offer consumers the highest levels of interoperability with both new and existing digital music services.
Mike Wodopian, SigmaTel's senior vice president of the Portable SoC Group, states, "Within this fast growing market, SigmaTel is aligning itself with industry leaders such as Microsoft to help set both the technology and usage standards that consumers will use in the future."
In addition, the SigmaTel SDK provides simultaneous support for WMDRM 10 and Portable Device DRM (PDDRM or WMDRM 9), allowing customers the flexibility to create players that can playback both download and subscription content from PCs running different operating systems including Windows 98, Windows 2000 and Windows ME. Dynamic switching between MTP and Mass Storage Class Universal Serial Bus (MSC USB) protocol eliminates the need for designs to have a separate USB port and allows for consumers to use their players seamlessly across different PCs and operating systems. An on-chip Real Time Clock (RTC) supports subscription-based music services without requiring additional components in the player design. The SigmaTel WMDRM 10 implementation is fully supported in on-chip SRAM and requires no external SDRAM, further reducing the bill of materials of the player while allowing customers to deliver DRM-enabled products on current designs. Through its commitment to "Innovation via Integration," SigmaTel continues to deliver advanced feature support beyond that offered by the competition.
A demonstration of SigmaTel's latest SDK supporting WMDRM 10 functionality will be showcased at the Computex Tradeshow in Taipei, Taiwan, May 31-June 4. Please contact SigmaTel Sales at computex2005@sigmatel.com if you wish to schedule a meeting at this event.
