Misonix's Sonora Subsidiary Announces First Sale of New Advanced Acoustic Measurement System
20 May 2005
Misonix, Inc. (Nasdaq: MSON - News), a developer of ultrasonic medical device technology for the treatment of cancer and other healthcare purposes, announced today that its Sonora Medical Systems subsidiary has introduced an advanced Acoustic Measurement System ("AMS") for measuring and analyzing the various acoustic properties of diagnostic ultrasound equipment and related transducers. Sonora also reported today that is has sold its first AMS unit. The system provides unprecedented levels of accuracy for testing and calibration of ultrasonic equipment to ensure patient safety and procedural efficacy. Sonora's AMS suite uniquely provides comprehensive integration of testing and measuring of the acoustic output properties associated with diagnostic ultrasound systems and their transducers. The new AMS allows users to test the combination of the ultrasound system with the probe attached. Sonora also sells its popular First Call product designed for stand alone probe testing and repair activities.
As a leading provider of diagnostic and therapeutic medical devices using ultrasonic technology, Misonix is fully compliant with regulatory guidelines, including those from the United States Food and Drug Administration. These mandates require manufacturers of diagnostic ultrasound equipment to perform careful acoustic measurements on their systems and transducers before they can be cleared to be sold in the United States. Specifically, ongoing test sampling of the equipment once it is cleared for sale should include objective evidence that the acoustic output power produced by the system-probe combination does not exceed statutory limits which are intended to ensure patient safety. The Sonora AMS system provides the world's only commercially available completely integrated device designed to test and analyze the acoustic output performance of diagnostic ultrasound equipment and transducers.
The AMS product allows for probe positional resolution not presently available in any commercial product. This will allow an original equipment manufacturer ("OEM") even more precise acoustic measurement options. "We are very excited about the initial reaction to our new product," said G. Wayne Moore, President of Sonora Medical. "We received our first order from a major ultrasound manufacturer in Japan in less than a week after our product was launched, and reception of the new product has been encouraging."
Michael A. McManus, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer of Misonix, commented, "Sonora continues to set the standard in the field of ultrasound metrology. The Acoustic Measurement System is the first release of several new ultrasound test instruments in development. This is an important product for Misonix as we believe it is best-in-class and addresses a potential global market of approximately $20 million."
Sonora Medical Systems is an ISO-9001/2000 certified provider of aftermarket products and services to the diagnostic ultrasound and MRI markets.
