Applied Process Technology's PulseOx 100 In-Situ AOP System Sets New Standard for Treatment Expediency

17 May 2005

APPLIED PROCESS TECHNOLOGY, INC. (Applied) announces the commercial availability of its PulseOx 100 in-situ chemical oxidation system for the rapid and low-cost removal of contaminants in soil and groundwater. Field demonstrations have shown that the new product's ability to destroy contamination directly in the subsurface is so efficient that it is significantly reducing projected cleanup schedules.

"I am impressed by the rapid degradation of fuel oxygenate contamination that has occurred in a short period of operational time at my site," stated Ron Bailey of Stratus Environmental, Inc. "The PulseOx 100 system has been operational for approximately two months and MTBE and TBA concentrations have decreased by orders of magnitude. The programmable PulseOx 100 system has been extremely reliable and requires very little maintenance. The technical support we've received has also been very helpful. We are leasing the unit for a 12-month period, but I will be surprised if the site isn't cleaned up in a shorter timeframe."

PulseOx 100 is a new model in a line of PulseOx advanced oxidation process (AOP) treatment systems that aggressively oxidize groundwater contaminants by pulsing and cycling the injection of up to four different reagents -- ozone, hydrogen peroxide, oxygen, and air -- in precise, pre-programmed combinations, dosages, and sequences into the subsurface environment through proprietary nested injection wells. Ozone can be injected independently or together with hydrogen peroxide to form hydroxyl radicals. Both ozone and hydroxyl radicals aggressively break down organic contaminants. The pulsing of oxidants also helps to flush adsorbed phase contaminants into the groundwater where they can be treated by the PulseOx chemical oxidation process. The sub-surface injection of oxidants also increases dissolved oxygen levels in the groundwater, which can assist in promoting growth of chemical-degrading bacteria.

The chemistry employed in the PulseOx process is especially effective for treating a wide variety of petroleum constituents, chlorinated solvents, industrial chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, and a broad range of other organic compounds.

"The PulseOx 100 product is proving to be a very efficient and cost effective solution for remediating contaminant plumes and hot spots in both deep and shallow aquifers," stated Terry Applebury, Applied's president and CEO. "Our initial pilot trials have shown tremendous results in a very short time, and demand for the product is growing quickly."

The results of one recent field demonstration showed that the PulseOx 100 system achieved 98% removal of TPHg, reduction of BTEX to non-detectable levels, reduction of MTBE by up to 85%, and reduction of TBA by up to 99% in the source area hot spot within a few short weeks. Those contaminants had been present at concentrations as high as 32,000 ig/L, 8,502 ig/L, 220,000 ig/L, and 200,000 ig/L, respectively.

PulseOx systems are available in a variety of sizes and configurations to treat large or small plumes, hot spots, or to provide a treatment barrier to prevent plume migration. Ozone delivery capacities range from 1 to 15 pounds per day depending on treatment requirements.

Results from several PulseOx treatment demonstrations will be presented during the technical sessions of the National Ground Water Association's conference on MTBE & Perchlorate to be held on May 26-27, 2005, at the InterContinental Mark Hopkins in San Francisco. A PulseOx 100 system will be displayed at the Applied booth. During the conference, Applied will also present technical papers describing the ability of the HiPOx(TM) AOP system to destroy 1,2,3-trichloropropane (TCP) to below the 5 ppt notification level in California and the successful use of a unique hollow fiber membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) to reduce perchlorate, nitrate and co-contaminants in drinking water.

Applied Process Technology, Inc. (Applied) (www.aptwater.com) provides technically superior ex-situ and in-situ water treatment solutions and services to the water industry. Applied specializes in treatment technologies that do not generate byproducts or waste streams. HiPOx products utilize advanced oxidation and chemical oxidation processes to destroy a wide variety of VOCs and microcontaminants, treat Geosmin, odor, taste, and color contaminants, and perform disinfection. PulseOx in-situ chemical oxidation technology treats groundwater contamination directly in the aquifer. The novel membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) technology utilizes autotrophic biological reduction to destroy contaminants such as perchlorate, nitrate, and chlorinated solvents.
