D&E Communications Enters VoIP Market With Launch of Jazzd Phone Service for Broadband
12 May 2005
D&E Communications (NasdaqNM:DECC - News) is offering central Pennsylvania residents a competitive alternative for phone service by launching Jazzd Phone Service for Broadband. Using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, the new service includes unlimited local and domestic long distance calling, enhanced 911 service, the ability to receive and forward voice mail messages through e-mail, a web site to control custom calling features, and D&E's own telemarketer call blocking service -- all for $29.99 per month.
"Jazzd Phone offers consumers the opportunity to save money on long distance calling and customize their own service by turning features on and off or adjusting them through the web," said James W. Morozzi, D&E's President and Chief Executive Officer. "This service is particularly useful as a second line, and allows broadband subscribers to tap into a whole new use for their high-speed Internet connection."
By plugging a D&E Jazzd Phone Adapter into a DSL or cable modem, customers can use their regular telephone to make and receive calls over their broadband Internet connection. The voice signal is converted to a digital signal that travels over the Internet. This convergence of voice and data technologies gives customers quick, convenient control over their phone service, including:
-- A password-protected web site where each subscriber can control features such as international or 900-number blocking. Subscribers also can view their bills online.
-- The ability to activate and adjust D&E's telemarketer call blocking service.
-- Unified messaging, which allows customers the choice to receive their voice mail messages as sound files in an e-mail. This makes it convenient to monitor messages while on the go, and to forward messages to other people. Recognizing the importance of emergency calling, D&E has worked to establish enhanced 911 service with 12 counties in central Pennsylvania. Jazzd Phone Service enables customers in those counties to register online with the local emergency communications center. This will allow emergency dispatchers to identify the phone's registered location if the customer calls 911 but is unable to speak -- an advantage not available with many VoIP services.
"Our company has been serving customers in parts of Lancaster, Berks and Union counties since the early 1900s. Jazzd Phone gives us the ability to offer our exceptional customer service and special features like telemarketer blocking service to residents in a broader region of central Pennsylvania," Morozzi said. "It's a great opportunity for our company to grow, and for customers to have more competitive choices for their phone service."
Jazzd Phone Service is available to customers in the U.S. who have a high-speed Internet connection, with phone numbers available in Lancaster, Berks, York, Dauphin, Cumberland, Montgomery, and Lebanon counties. Phone numbers for Centre, Union, Blair, and Northumberland counties will be added later this year. For more information, visit www.jazzdphone.com or call 1-877-433-8632.
