Fuel Cell Technologies Ltd. Ships System to Power Greenhouse
9 May 2005
Fuel Cell Technologies Limited (FCT), a leading developer and producer of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems, today announced that it has shipped a 5 kW SOFC combined heat and power (CHP) system to the Memphis Botanic Garden. The installation is being funded by Gas Technology Institute's (GTI) Distributed Generation Mutual Fund (DGMF) members.
"Members of the DGMF consortium are primarily gas utilities who have a keen interest in promoting the use of fuel cells, especially SOFCs because of their high efficiencies and environmental benefits, as well as the combined heat and power capabilities. These utilities have the potential to become major customers of FCT, and installations such as this confirm that the technology is on the path towards commercialization", said John Stannard, President and CEO of FCT.
Supplying heat and electrical power to the Conservatory greenhouse, the FCT system will be used to provide domestic hot water and maintain the tropical environment required in the greenhouse. DGMF members have selected Memphis Light, Gas, and Water, a DGMF member, as the host utility.
GTI is the leading research, development and training organization serving the natural gas industry, and is a key participant in this initiative. For more than 60 years, GTI has been meeting the nation's energy and environmental challenges by developing technology-based solutions for consumers, industry, and government. The DGMF promotes the development and verification of emerging distributed generation (DG) technologies, such as fuel cells, to keep members at the cutting-edge of promising new technologies.
Over the past decade, FCT has designed and built custom fuel cell power systems. Fuel cell systems are the future of power generation because of their environmental benefits and high efficiency. FCT's SOFCs are designed to operate on a variety of readily available fuels and provide a highly efficient, environmentally friendly method to produce on-site electricity and heat that can be used in a variety of remote, commercial, industrial and residential applications. FCT is now delivering systems to customers around the world, and in the first quarter of 2005 shipped to customers in Canada, Brazil and the USA.
