Power Electronics Pioneer Dr. Fred C. Lee Awarded 2004 Ernst Blickle Prize
29 April 2005
Today, the EUR100,000 Sew EURODRIVE Foundation Ernst Blickle prize was awarded to Dr. Fred C. Lee by SEW EURODRIVE Chairman, Rainer Blickle. The awards event took place at Bruchsal Castle. The American scientist received this year's research prize for his outstanding and pioneering contributions to the field of power electronics, which has become an increasingly important driver of technological innovation and progress in Germany in recent years. This technology, which converts, transmits and regulates the flow of electrical energy, plays a central role in numerous areas, particularly energy conservation. In fact, the widespread use of power electronics technology could reduce energy consumption in the U.S. alone by up to 30 percent, an achievement to which Dr. Lee has made a major contribution over the past three decades. Thanks to Dr. Lee the "Center for Power Electronics Systems" (CPES), a center for research of the "National Science Foundation" has been founded in Virginia in 1998. Since its inception Dr. Lee has been CPES's director.
CPES organized numerous research labs and institutions of higher education into a power electronics research network, thus discovering an innovative way to pool resources in this field. In addition to the significant and original research that Dr. Lee has carried out, he has also played a crucial role in nurturing the talents of young scientists.
Dr. Lee is the 12th scientist since 1991 to have won the SEW EURODRIVE Foundation's award for outstanding research. The non-profit foundation was founded in 1989 by Edeltraut Blickle in memory of the entrepreneurial achievements and service to the SEW EURODRIVE Group of her husband Ernst, who died in 1986. The Ernst Blickle prize has been awarded to scientists from Austria, France, Germany, Switzerland and the U.S. Last year's prizewinner was Dr. Joachim Milberg.
