Kintera Completes SAS 70 Type II Audit
29 April 2005
Kintera(r), Inc. (NASDAQ:KNTA - News), the leading provider of software as a service to nonprofit and government organizations, today announced the completion of the SAS 70 Type II audit of Kintera's controls and procedures.
The Statement on Auditing Standards (SAS) No. 70, Service Organizations, is an internationally recognized auditing standard developed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Service organizations that successfully complete a SAS 70 audit have been through an in-depth audit of their control activities, including controls over information technology and related processes.
In today's business environment, service organizations and service providers must demonstrate that they have adequate controls and safeguards when hosting data belonging to their customers. In addition, Sarbanes-Oxley now mandates that chief executive officers and chief financial officers of publicly traded companies take personal responsibility for the effectiveness of internal control over financial reporting. As a result, the SAS 70 audit is a preferred method of providing assurance for service organization clients subject to Section 404 of Sarbanes-Oxley.
"It is critical that technology providers serving the nonprofit and government sectors obtain SAS 70 Type II certification to make sure that process controls and safeguards are in place," said Jim Rotherham, chief financial officer at Kintera. "Kintera's compliance further demonstrates our commitment to providing a secure, scaleable and reliable enterprise-level software platform to our thousands of clients."
Kintera's SAS 70 compliance includes:
IT Controls: strict definition and consistent testing -- Application development -- Firewall configuration and access -- Database access -- Data transmissions -- Data backup and recovery -- Application security -- Product development consistency and control
Personnel Controls: strict definition and documented enforcement of staff access to data -- No user permissions to servers or data without specific procedure -- All access and activity logged -- Physical access highly controlled and logged -- Database schema, tables and permissions tightly controlled
Financial controls: strict definition and consistent testing -- Payment processing -- Account reconciliation -- Enforced role definition and separation -- Consistent auditing of balances -- Payable controls
Kintera recently reported that the company is in compliance with Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.
"Kintera's compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley benefits our customers in light of the recent move, spearheaded by Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), requiring nonprofits to adopt self-regulatory measures similar to Sarbanes-Oxley in the near future," Rotherham added. "Nonprofit organizations are realizing the importance of increased accountability to build consumer and regulatory trust. Working with a software as a service provider that is in compliance is a fundamental step toward compliance with the regulations nonprofits will likely face."
